1.
Welcome to new committee members – (Mike & Cherie):
Alan Fugleberg (Admin) and Aleta Joksich (Student) were introduced and officially welcomed on committee.
2.
Update on GHG Inventory (Cherie/Jen):
 Jennifer has an intern, Andrew Endris, who will assist in collecting data to update the GHG Inventory. Cherie, Jen
and Andrew are using a data collection sheet built from the work done for the first inventory. The current
inventory will hopefully include data that was not collected for the first one, such as travel by athletics,
composting, paper, and offsetting forestry practices at Lubrecht. If anyone knows of a student that would be
interested in working though the forestry practices protocol, let Cherie know. Having different data set will make
comparison to the 2008 inventory more difficult but an effort will be made to display comparable data as well as
the new data.
 The period for the update will be fiscal 2010 (July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2010)
 Due date for submittal is January 15, 2011 (original due date was September 15, 2010)
 Also, whether UM can qualify for any informal offsets for its forestry/conservation assets.
3.
Update on Social Marketing Campaign (Cherie):
 Ads are running weekly in the Kaimin and there are light pole banners on campus
 In response to an EPA-sponsored ‘Waste-wise game day’ a home football game on October 23rd has been
designated as Green Griz Day. There are over 80 universities that will be participating in this event (including
MSU).
 There are five recycling categories in the EPA contest and measurements will be taken after the game to
determine the amount of recycling accomplished.
 Jen is working with Rick Hughes, from Medial Arts on video clips to show on Griz Vision during the game. These
clips will be available to put on U-tube, UM’s GreeningUM Website, etc
 One Green Griz game will be designated for each sport this year.
 Robin mentioned one of his classes will include a social marketing workshop on October 18 & 20. The workshop
will be from 4pm-5:30pm in Janet Rankin 202.
 Three Eco-Reps are doing activities in the dorms. Darcy Klessens is and Climate Change Studies intern working
with Cherie. All are collaborating to organize an energy and water conservation competition in the dorms. Darcy
is reading meters weekly, first to get baseline data then to track progress of the competition. Events are being
planned to kick-off the event and to announce winners. Jennifer and Tom Javins are also involved. There may be
a need for funding media and prizes but that will be determined by the students.
4.
RELF Committee Renaming, New Members, Update (Robin):
 First fall meeting of the RELF committee was held to discuss funding projects. There is a deadline of November 4,
2010 for any energy saving proposals for auxiliary buildings.
 Robin will meet with Alan Fugleberg regarding the possibility of projects at COT.
 RELF committee recommends to the SCC that RELF be renamed the ‘Kless Revolving Energy Loan Fund’ and the
Committee be renamed the ‘Kless Revolving Energy Loan Fund Committee’.
 There was a motion to accept the recommendation of renaming contingent on approval &/or lack of objections
by Kless family. There was a motion to table the original motion but this was voted down. An amendment to the
original motion was then suggested and accepted by Robin, who made the original motion. The amended
motion included ‘or from a family member of those who passed away’. The amended motion was passed.
 Robin will check that the Kless family received the letter from the EVST department with Sonny’s diploma. Robin
will also talk to Media Relations on how to approach the families regarding the renaming.
 Two new members were nominated to join the RELF committee – Trent Hanson, ASUM Business Manager and
Ada Montague (law school Student). These nominations were approved by the SCC.
5.
Possible Award Ceremony for President Dennison (Cherie Peacock):
 Cherie read an email from the ACPUCC regarding President Dennison’s ACUPCC Climate Leadership Award.
 The award will be presented to President Dennison in Denver, Colorado on October 12, 2010 at a ACPUCC
leadership conference. Cherie will be attending as well.
 It was suggested that perhaps the award be mentioned at the Green Griz game and/or tree be planted on
campus commemorating this award. Jennifer will check with athletics regarding the game.
6.

There was a brief discussion of these topics and which should be a priority for the SCC. It was agreed that we could
informally designate leaders for each topic and discuss progress and needs at SCC meeting instead of choosing one or
two topics to address. Leaders are noted above.
General Discussion (All):
 Cherie provided a quick update on Biomass Project
The project is undergoing further scrutiny and testing of how the fuel we have access to will burn in the selected
technology. UM recently received $180,000 grant for the project and is hoping to receive more.
 Volunteers will be needed for future meetings to take notes. Please consider and offer your services at the
beginning of each meeting.
 Brian Kerns mentioned a company is that is interested in a test site for two ½ MW wind turbines that model a
