Emus are members of the ratite family, a classification of large flightless birds that includes Ostriches and Cassowaries. They are the second largest bird in the world and are native to Australia. They eat plants and insects in the wild, can grow to over six feet tall, and can run up to thirty miles per hour. Emus have long talons on the end of each toe that they use to defend themselves from predators. For this reason, ranchers often raise emus alongside other animals as a way to protect their herds and flocks. Commercial emu farming began in Australia in the 1970s and has since gained popularity in countries around the world. Emus are farmed for their meat, leather, feathers and oil.
