Fire Science Program Awarded FESHE Recognition
Fire Science faculty member Tim Caldwell (left) and Fire
Science/EMS Manager Dan Krakora proudly display the
certificate awarded by Fire and Emergency Services Higher
Education (FESHE), which provides acknowledgement that
a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the
standards of excellence established by FESHE and the
National Fire Academy (NFA). To date, approximately 80
colleges and universities throughout the U.S. have received
this prestigious academic recognition. “This was a rigorous,
three-year process,” Krakora said. “However, once we
realized the benefit of this recognition for our students and
the College, we worked very hard to reach this goal. This will
benefit our students and will open doors to their future
careers in fire science.” Read More

Life Lessons Learned at DePaul Social Justice Training
COD students Stephany Ruiz-Gonzalez (left) of
Plainfield and Paolo Mazza of West Chicago are
challenging themselves to implement what they learned
during a recent Student Social Justice Training Institute
at DePaul University. The institute invited approximately
50 students from colleges and universities across the
country, including Hawaii, California, Texas and Florida.
The four-day experience provided opportunities for
participants to focus on personal learning and
development in order to become social justice change
agents. “I definitely used this as a leadership
opportunity,” Ruiz-Gonzalez said. “This was a way to
open myself to more perspectives. The institute not only
helped train me as a leader but also helped me embrace
even more the differences we find in each other.” Mazza
noted that the experience deepened his abilities to
understand others. “This experience furthered a dialogue
about the issues and made me accept the responsibility
of creating an inclusive environment.” Read More

with high school students participating in the Early College
Initiative during an orientation session held at COD. Nearly
50 students from West Chicago and Glenbard East high
schools are the first participants in this pilot program that
began this fall. Starting their junior year, students take one
college course each semester and can opt to keep the
momentum – and college credits – building with a summer
class, earning up to 15 credit hours by the time they finish
high school. College of DuPage instructors go to the high
school, working directly with the students and teachers to
complete five key courses: English, speech, psychology,
sociology and economics. Click here for more photos.
