Bill Daley Spends the Day at COD
Bill Daley, former White House Chief of Staff for
President Barack Obama, shared his optimism for the
nation’s economic and political future during a visit
to College of DuPage on Feb. 25. Following a tour of
the Homeland Security Education Center, Daley
addressed more than 400 students, faculty and staff
members during a free session in the SRC. Special
Counsel to President Bill Clinton for the passage of
the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993,
Daley was also Secretary of Commerce from 1997 to
2000. He served as chairman of Al Gore's campaign
committee in the 2000 presidential election.

Tara Molnar Credits COD with Current Success
Former student Tara Cachur Molnar credits COD and its
faculty with giving her the confidence to pursue higher
education. “I didn't enjoy high school. My grades were good and

to graduate early, but I was just so lost and
. didn't know what to do,” she said. “I didn't have the money to go
to a university, so I decided to enroll at COD. The minute I
entered, I realized I could set my own pace. COD was a chance to

Robert Pavelchik and COD Police Chief Joe Mullin at last
week’s Board of Trustees meeting. The badge was given in
recognition of the College’s vision and support for first
responder training. In fall 2010, COD completed Phase One of
the Homeland Security Training Institute (HSTI) through
construction of the Homeland Security Education Center. Phase
Two of this project is in the planning stages and involves the
construction of the Midwest Regional Training Center, an offcampus, comprehensive facility that will serve local, state and
federal agencies using a multi-jurisdictional, collaborative
approach to training and communication. Click here to view a

Double Kudos to…Specialized Testing Services
Coordinator Jarret Dyer and Testing Office Supervisor
Danielle Conlee, who were recently invited to serve on the
Grants Committee for the National College Testing
Association (NCTA). Dyer is the committee’s chair and
Conlee is a committee advisor. In addition, the COD
Testing Center has been selected by the Law School
Admission Council to serve as its primary location for the
Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and Multistate
Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) for COD
students and DuPage County residences. The Testing Center
will begin offering these exams beginning April 2013.
Kudos to…The subcommittee of the Global Education
Advisory Committee, charged with reviewing the
applications for Global Education Initiatives, which has
selected proposals for Spring 2013 that demonstrate their
ability to enrich the applicants’ courses and curriculum,
promote course development, and enhance the student
experience through multicultural programming. The
following proposals were selected and funded by the GEAC
subcommittee: Barbel Thoens-Masghati, “Study Abroad
Germany,” $1,500; European Studies Committee, “ESC
Event,” $900; Deanna Davisson, “Criminal Justice in
Israel,” $750; Adam Fotos, “Art in Japan,” $500; and
Diane Wawrejko, “Dance in Finland,” $500. Special
thanks to GEAC subcommittee members Kris Fay, Chris
Goergen, Naheed Hasan and Sue Kerby, as well as
Jean Kartje, Vice President of Academic Affairs, who
supported the subcommittee’s decision and approved the
proposals.
More Kudos to…the Admissions and Outreach
team, who welcomed 510 individuals to campus for the
College’s annual President’s Day Visit last week!
Even More Kudos to… members of the Enrollment
Support Center in Student Registration Services,
who made 22,254 calls to students between Sept. 3, 2012,
and Jan. 25, 2013. These calls consisted of different call
campaigns for all different areas of the College, including
Financial Aid (4,686 calls), Testing (1,851 calls), Advising
(995 calls), the myACCESS Lab (229 calls), the Finance
Office (1,741 calls) and Admission and Outreach, which
included prospects (1,100 calls), applicants (9,090 calls) and
special events such as Student Parent Information Night
(SPIN) (1,898 calls) and the Adult Open House (664 calls).

Crosby, who has been appointed by the American Academy
of Colleges of Nursing to the Leadership Council of
the New Graduate Nursing Student Academy. A
faculty member since 2002, Crosby is a graduate

Writers Read Hosts Bich
Minh Nguyen March 11
Acclaimed author Bich Minh
Nguyen will read and discuss her
work at College of DuPage on
Monday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in
HSC 1234.This free event, cosponsored by the Creative Writing
committee and the Asian Studies
committee, is part COD’s
“Writer's Read” series, which
brings authors to COD for
readings and discussions.
Nguyen's memoir Stealing
Buddha's Dinner, released in 2007, received the PEN/Jerard Award
from the PEN American Center and was a Chicago Tribune Best
Book of 2007, a Kiriyama Prize Notable Book, and an Asian
American Literature Award finalist. Her novel Short Girls was
released in 2009 and won an American Book Award in fiction and
named a Best Book of the Year by Library Journal. Read More
College Theater Presents ‘Spoon River Anthology’
College of DuPage College Theater’s “Spoon River Anthology” is
running now through March 10 in the Building K Theater. Directed
by Theater Professor Connie Canaday Howard and adapted by
Michael Moon, “Spoon River Anthology” is a collection of poems
from Edgar Lee Masters' seminal 1915 book of poetry shared from
the perspective of its deceased residents. Read More
