Celebrating Lombard and Villa Park

COD/UIUC Offer Guaranteed Admissions
Program for Engineering Students
College of DuPage and the College of Engineering at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently
announced the formation of Guaranteed Admissions Transfer
Program (GATP) between the institutions. “This agreement
offers COD students guaranteed admission to the College of
Engineering at UIUC, which is a tremendous opportunity,”
said COD President Robert L. Breuder. “It is a great
accolade for COD's science and engineering programs that
UIUC has created an unqualified pathway for our students to
gain admission to the College of Engineering for completion
of their degree.” College of DuPage will host an information
session about this program at the Glen Ellyn campus on
Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in HSC Atrium.

“STARS” Online Scholarship Application System
Spring Foundation scholarship applications are now
submitted online through the Scholarship Tracking and
Review System. STARS Online was implemented in
November 2011 for spring Foundation scholarships, and the
number of students submitting applications surpassed all
previous figures. “STARS far exceeded our expectations,” said
Brenda Marcy, coordinator of Scholarships at College of
DuPage. “The new system makes it easier for students to
apply and for us to review their applications more efficiently.”

COD Hosts Japan: The Spirit of Tradition and
Forces of Modernization March 22
The College of DuPage Asia Committee will host “Japan: The
Spirit of Tradition and Forces of Modernization” on Thursday,
March 22, with activities scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. in
SRC 2800. The
symposium will begin
with opening remarks
made by COD President
Robert L. Breuder and
the Honorable
Okamura Yoshifumi,
Consul General of Japan
at Chicago. In addition,
the symposium will
include presentations on
Japanese history, art and
culture, as well as Hula/Bollywood dancing, a fashion and talent
show, a Taiko Drummers performance, film screening and Aikido
demonstration. In addition, winners of a student poster contest,
“Japan: Overcoming the Tsunami,” will be announced. All

Poet Amy Newman
The COD Writers Read Series
presents a free lecture and
discussion with Poet Amy
Newman at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, March 21, in
SRC 2800. Newman is the
author of Order, or Disorder,
Camera Lyrica, Dear Editor
and fall. Her poems and
essays have appeared in
numerous journals and
anthologies in North America and Europe. Newman is also a
recipient of three Individual Artists Fellowships, the Lexi
Rudnitsky Editor's Price, the Beatrice Hawley Award, the
Cleveland State University Poetry Center Prize and a MacDowell

2011 Woman of Distinction Award Ceremony
The winner of the 2012 Adade Wheeler Woman of Distinction
will be honored at a reception on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m.
in SRC 2800. This event is free and open to the public. The
program will include keynote speaker Theodora Ayot, North
Park University History professor, who will present “The
Changing Image of the African Woman within the Context of the
Historical Perspective.” The Woman of Distinction award has
been given annually since 1983 to individuals who have made
significant contributions to the personal and professional
advancement of women through education, advocacy and

‘Tobacco-Free’ Contest
Deadline is March 23
COD is hosting a contest to name the
“tobacco-free” information campaign.
Students, faculty and staff members
are eligible to submit ideas, with the
winner taking home a new Amazon
Kindle Fire and a fall premium parking pass. Submissions will
be accepted now through Friday, March 23, at noon. All entries
should be sent to newsbureau@cod.edu and must contain the
contestant's name, email address and phone number. For more

Waterleaf Welcomes Rotary Club of Naperville
The Rotary Club of Naperville's Scholarship Committee
recently met with College of DuPage Foundation and
Financial Aid representatives at Waterleaf restaurant in
the Culinary & Hospitality Center. For more than a
decade, the Rotary Club of Naperville has provided
$30,000 in annual scholarships for COD students.

Kudos to…WDCB 90.9fm, which recently completed its
week-long Spring Pledge Drive, exceeding its $110,000 goal
by 7 percent and earning donations in excess of $118,000.
WDCB News Coordinator Brian O’Keefe noted: “Over the
past week, Jazz fans from Chicago and literally from around
the world have again demonstrated their support for WDCB.
During the campaign, more than 1,100 listeners throughout
the Chicago Metro area called the station. And, thanks to
WDCB’s internet stream, people from Ohio, California,
Canada and even Dublin, Ireland, also called to show their
support.”
Student Essay Contest Deadline March 21
The submission deadline for this year's ICCTA Student Essay
Contest at COD is Wednesday, March 21. All currently enrolled
students are eligible to enter. Grade Point Average is not a
factor. Students must provide a brief essay (500 words or less)
that outlines how the College has impacted their lives. Essays
will be judged on the basis of writing style, clarity of expression
and relevance to the topic, as well as punctuation and correct
grammar. The first prize winner receives $100. Second prize is
$50 and third prize is $25. The winning entry is also entered
into the statewide essay competition. Click here for a submission

The COD Center for Access and Accommodations will host an
information night at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, in SSC

Veterans of America and the Illinois State Approving Agency
at Cantigny in Winfield.
