COD First Community College to Receive
Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education
The College of DuPage community is invited to attend a
special awards ceremony on Monday, June 11, from 9 to
10 a.m. (program begins at 9:30 a.m.) in the Homeland
Security Education Center where Erica Borggren, Director
of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, will present the
College with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in
Education. COD is the first community college in the state to
receive this recognition from the Illinois Department of
Veterans Affairs. This prestigious award is given to Illinois
colleges and universities that provide exceptional
programming and services that “significantly impact the
overall experience of the student veteran community.”
COD Serves as NATO Command Center
State and federal agencies and military personnel were
recently entrenched at the Homeland Security Education
Center. The new 65,000 square-foot center served as the
State Forward Operations in support of the NATO Summit in
Chicago on May 20 and 21.

Officials from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency,
Federal Emergency Management Agency, Illinois National
Guard and additional agencies conducted exercises and
operations that tested the building’s design and systems. A
VIP delegation from NATO also toured the facility on Friday,
May 18. Trenton Thompson, IEMA Chief of Operations,
praised College of DuPage for its facilities and staff.
“Establishing an operational footprint during a disaster
response can be a daunting task,” he said. “Establishing it as
preparation for the NATO 2012 Conference seemed like an
all-consuming task. But the leadership and staff at College
of DuPage made the challenge seem more like a daily
task. The facilities are incredible and met our every need. As
for the staff, you couldn’t ask for a more supportive and
willing team to work with.” Joseph Cassidy, COD Dean of
Continuing Education/Extended Learning, said this type of
activity was envisioned when designing the HEC. “In addition
to the excellent academic work in the classrooms, we
realized the potential of having a facility that could be used
to support regional public safety and community service,”
he said.

COD Police Officers Commended for Exceptional Service
College of DuPage Police Officers Al Silva (left) and
Jeff Priest were recently recognized by the COD Board of
Trustees for their exceptional service in assisting a
student in a life-threatening situation. After determining
the student was having an allergic reaction, Priest, a
trained EMT, provided an injection epinephrine, while Silva
calmed the patient who began to slowly recover before
the paramedics arrived. Silva and Priest were recognized
by Police Chief Joe Mullin before the Board of Trustees
and thanked for their quick actions and contributions to
the student’s recovery.

and many other faculty members in the COD design program.
The communications firm I interned for in downtown
Chicago were also very impressed with the work I produced
coming from a two year program. Thanks again.”
