Remembering Jewish Lawndale “Remembering Jewish Lawndale,” a short film about the rich history of this Chicago neighborhood, will be screened at 2 and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, in HSC 1234. Coproduced by the COD Geography program and the Illinois Geographical Society, the 30-minute film details the history of Lawndale and its Jewish heritage. “Lawndale was Chicago’s largest Jewish community after World War I. (People) came here from Chicago’s Maxwell Street area because they wanted improved living conditions and such things as indoor plumbing,” said Keith Yearman, COD associate geography professor and co-producer of this project. “Earlier this year, a big synagogue in Lawndale – Anshe Kanesses Israel (pictured above) – was torn down, and the loss of that gem drove us to document what’s left of the old Jewish community.” Read More Former COD Student Leigh Stein at Writers Read Former COD student Leigh Stein will read from her new poetry collection and her debut novel, “The Fallback Plan,” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, in SRC 2000. The free event is part of the College’s popular “Writers Read” series, which brings authors to COD’s campus for readings and discussion. “The Fallback Plan” is the 27-year-old Stein’s first novel, which the Chicago Tribune described as “an enchantingly funny and insightful debut novel…which has a universal quality, capturing a generation’s angst quite like ‘Franny and Zooey’ did when it was published in 1961.” Read More COD Military Friendly School for Fourth Consecutive Year For the fourth consecutive year, COD has been named a "Military Friendly School" by G.I. Click here for a list of volunteers! And More…This note came from adjunct math instructor Carolina Ediza: “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve our guests who entered one of our ‘gates’ at the north side of the SRC. For me, it was one way of knowing the layout of the campus again with all the additions and structural changes of its ever- growing premises. Just knowing the location of my fall term classrooms is not enough to appreciate this beautiful campus, so I grabbed this chance. “Beautiful and clean!” That was the consensus of the guests as I engaged with them. I couldn't agree more.” 5K Sign-Up Day Sept. 28! Next Friday, Sept. 28, is 5K SignUp Day! Register today for Laps with the Chaps Sunset 5K Run/Walk and receive early bird registration rates.
