Be Respectful. Follow directions the first time they are given. Good on Green: A behavior system that focuses on each individual child’s behavior. This behavior system will be tied into our classroom economy (Bulldog Bucks). A FEW THINGS TO NOTE… • Birthdays (non-edible treats) • Snacks • Nut-free classrooms • Guidance program will include topics such as stress management and interpersonal skills. 4TH GRADE CURRICULUM Dublin City Schools has been using “The Workshop Model” for many years. This is simply an instructional model where students are given direct instruction in a mini lesson. They are then given time to practice the skills and concepts covered in the mini lesson. During this time, the teacher is monitoring students’ work and meeting with students individually or in small groups to meet their specific needs. At the end of the working time, students often have a chance to share out their experiences and learning. READING/WRITING WORKSHOP • Students will be working in a workshop model to develop their reading and writing skills/styles. • Reading Curriculum: Making connections, inferences, questioning, comprehension, compare/ contrast, context clues, predictions, visualization, etc. • Students will be responsible for having a book in school at all times. • Reading home is an expectation/requirement of all 4th grade students. • Weekly Graph and Prompts • The students will be asked to write using a variety of formats. • There will be multiple writing pieces this year. • Creative writing opportunities as well as expository writing. • Scholastic News will be used to teach current events and informational texts. WORD STUDY W O R D S T U D Y I S N O T A FA N C Y W O R D F O R S P E L L I N G . • The study of the meanings of words and how they work. • Intermediate grades: word recognition, visual strategies, and expanding vocabulary. • There will be a focus on word bases, prefixes, and suffixes. • Curriculum Topics: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base 10 and fractions, measurement and data, and geometry • Pre-assessments may be used for a topic in order to determine students’ prior knowledge • Workshop model helps support differentiation for all students • Continuous assessment (formal and informal) to gauge students current skill set • Opportunities for short answer and extended response • Ways to practice math facts at home • Math Fact Cafe • Flashcards/Apps • Math Magician SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES • Science Curriculum: landforms, fossils, electricity, heat, and matter. • Inquiry-based units: observation, discussion, reading, writing, hands-on experimentation, and demonstration. • Social Studies Curriculum: • A Study of Ohio and Nation: geography, history, economics, and government. • Learn through reading, discussion, role-play, entrepreneurship, and writing letters to the editor. We try to limit it on weekends, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. • Drop off table: In an effort to help students build responsibility, we will be using a drop off table. The students will not be called down to the office for late homework. T E S T I N G D AT E S We will communicate the testing dates as soon as the specific dates are available. Currently we only have “windows” for testing. The end of year testing window is between April 4th and May 6th.
