Read Across America Week is coming up
soon! This will be a fun-filled week that will
encourage our kids to read, read, read! We
will be reading a ton of great books,
collecting non-perishable food items to
donate to the Dublin Food Pantry, and
celebrating school spirit week. Look for
more information about this coming home
next week. Thank you in advance for your
support!

Math - Operations and
Algebraic Thinking
We have been working hard on the
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)
Standards. Kindergarten students are
learning how to add by joining two
groups of objects or numbers
together. We are also working on
solving word problems to join two
groups together. Students use a
variety of strategies to solve these
addition/joining problems. Some use a
part-part-whole mat, some “count on,”
some use a number line, some students
use a 10 frame, etc. You can support
our learning at home by asking your
child to show you how they can figure
out addition/joining problems with
numbers less than 10. For example, Sam
had 4 grapes for snack. At dinner, he
ate 3 more grapes. How many grapes
did he eat? Your child should be able to
tell you that the “parts” are 4 and 3.
Then he or she should use a strategy
to solve the problem. Your child should
be able to solve to find that Sam ate 7
grapes. He or she should be able to tell
you that the “whole” (sum) is 7.
Students are also learning how to
decompose numbers. For example, 4
can be: 4+0, 3+1, 2+2. The picture below
shows a student thinking about the
different ways to make 4 using color
tiles. He is using green and blue tiles to
come up with the 5 ways to make 4. He
then records his thinking on his sheet.
