BIRTHDAY TREATS/SNACKS

Due to a wide variety of allergies Dublin City Schools has gone to a policy of no edible birthday treats. We will still recognize your child’s birthday here in class. If you want to send in a non-food treat such as pencils, stickers, etc. you may do so. I will pass them out at the end of the day.

Absences/Change in Dismissal

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, notify the office or me if your child is going to go home in a way that is different from their normal routine. If I do not have a note telling me of a change, I will send them home as they normally go.

If you know your child is going to be absent, please notify me so that I can plan accordingly. If your child is absent, they need to have a note when they return stating why they were not present at school.

Book Orders

I will send home Scholastic Book Orders each month. Through Scholastic you can purchase books for your child. These orders can be done online or you can return the order form to me to be submitted. A letter will be attached with instructions and a due date to the order forms each month. I do not take cash for book orders. You may write a check out to Scholastic Inc.

Take Home Folders

The PTO provides each student with a green folder. This folder has a label on the front with the student’s name, id number and classroom teacher. It is IMPORTANT that your child bring this folder to and from school EVERY DAY! This is how they will transport communication between the two. If you do not have a folder for your child, please let me know and I will get you one.

Reading At Home

Each child will bring home a RAH (Reading At Home) envelope.

Inside this envelope there will be a collection of books. These books will either be “just right” books (ones they need minimal to no help with) or instructional books (books that they are reading in guided reading groups). They will also have a reading log as well. Please try to have your child read at least one book from the RAH envelope each night and record it on their reading log.

Homework

Each child will bring homework home in his or her green OSE folder. This folder will have all their homework for the week. It will (mostly) go home on Friday but may come home on a Monday depending on the upcoming schedule for the week. I try to send it home all at once so that you can plan for it in your weekly schedule. The completed/signed cover page should be completed and returned on the following Friday to be emptied and then refilled for the upcoming week. I DO NOT take a grade on homework, however I do keep track of who is and is not completing it. I feel homework is an important aspect of your child’s development as a student and highly suggest completing it if you want to help your child succeed to the best of their ability.

Parent Volunteers/Related Arts

Using the student information sheets you returned to me during Open House I will develop a volunteer schedule. Please note that if you wish to volunteer you will need to have an official volunteer badge issued by the district. You can find more information on our website ( http://www.dublinschools.net/oldesawmillelementary_home.aspx

) as well as at the back of this packet.

I will do my best to keep you updated on our related arts schedule.

School Wide Enrichment

Students will learn the six habits of thinkers, and be presented projects designed to connect to their interests and readiness levels. There will be opportunities to work on long-term projects designed to develop project management skills, tenacity, and perseverance.

Behavior System

Student behavior will be monitored using the clip system. Every day students will arrive at school with their clips on green (Ready to Learn). Throughout the day a child’s clip can be moved up or down depending on the choices he or she makes. Positive choices such as consistently following directions, doing something kind without being asked, etc. will lead to a child’s clip being moved up. Poor choices such as not following directions, being disrespectful to students and staff, and not trying will lead to a child’s clip being moved down. (I do give at least one warning before having a child move his or her clip.)

If your child moves his or her clip to orange or red a note will be sent home stating what color your child was on and why. I ask that you discuss the behavior with your child, sign the note, and return it the next day.

If your child reaches purple or pink he or she will bring home a certificate letting you know how great the day was, refrigerator material for sure!
