Classroom Guidelines Welcome to 7th Grade! Your teacher’s goal is simple: To help you reach yours. Come to class prepared. o You should have all of your materials with you EVERY DAY. Your materials include: paper, pencil, pen, assignments, plan book, independent reading book and Author’s Notebook. Having a highlighter and post-­‐it notes will be beneficial as well. Be Prompt. o Be on time, prepared and ready to work and participate from the beginning of class until the end of class. Punctuality matters in the real world. The teacher dismissed the class not the bell. Be respectful to all people. o This mean that you should show respect to your classmates and teachers by talking kindly when speaking, paying attention and participating in class activities. Remember: Treat others as you would like to be treated. Always do your very best. o This means that you are expected to give 100% effort in class and on assignments. Share your thoughts and ideas. Be a problem solver! Our doors are always open – please do not hesitate to ask questions or see us for help. * Students are to recognize who models appropriate behavior/respect, motivation, work ethic and improvement. Author’s Notebook – (2” binder with 5 dividers) – will be sent home periodically for parent/student review. These notebooks will no be kept in class. Students are responsible for bringing the Author’s Notebook to class each day. Components of the Author’s Notebook – o Reading section: Strategy Notes, Responses, Assessments, etc… o Writing section: Sentence Structure, Responses, Notes, etc… o Word Study section: Spelling, Vocabulary, Affixes, etc… o Speaking and Listening section: strategies and skills practice This Notebook will be sued for student and parent conferences, goal setting/reflection, a collection of writings and reading strategies and as a reference tool for standards taught. Organization will be checked periodically so we can be sure students have the materials needed in our classroom. • GEMS Folder (Goals for Excellence through Monitoring Skills and Strategies) (two pocket folder – kept in room) – will be sent home periodically for review. Components for GEMS folder: • Reading Record: strategies/ strengths/ areas to improve – left pocket • Writing Record: strengths/ areas to improve – left pocket • Speaking Record: strengths/ areas to improve – left pocket • Finest Pieces: published writings – right pocket • Workshop Folder (two pocket folder – kept in room) – Current materials Components of Workshop Folder: • Mini-­‐Lessons – left pocket • Anchor Activity – right pocket • Reading and Writing Notebook (genre chart, Books I Want to Read, Stategy Practice, Responses, Journal Writing, Writing Process Application) Curriculum: -­‐

The Common Core State Standards will be taught throughout the year. Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking/Listening and Word Study will be incorporated into a variety of activities to demonstrate the importance of developing the necessary life skills of writing and reading. Our focus is to develop literacy skills of reading, writing, speaking, thinking and listening! The Reading and Writing Workshop model consists of whole class teaching, small group teaching, cooperative learning and individualization of student goals which will be used in the classroom. -­‐
Choice Independent Reading – a minimum of 3-­‐6 independent choice reading books are required per quarter. 100 minutes per week of reading is recommended. Weekly reading responses/strategy practice will be implemented based on this reading. A genre chart will be required to document books read each quarter. -­‐
Shared Academic Reading – shared novels will be incorporated this year. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE / APPLICATION (Homework) The majority of work will be completed in the classroom when you use your time wisely. Here are some examples of work that could continue outside of the classroom: 1.

An extention of work that has been introduced in class to strengthen skills Independent Reading and Writing Unfinished work that is within the student’s capability to finish at home A review to study and prepare for tests/ apply material learned Please be prompt in turning in assignments. Work should be turned in to the appropriate location (turn in tray). If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to check for your missing assignments in the “While You Were Out” tray. You should also see your teachers for an explanation of the assignment. Checking ProgressBook would also be a good idea. You have as many days to make up the work as you were absent. Mrs. Banker’s Guidelines: CLASSROOM RULES: general rules are posted in the classroom 1. ALL Davis Middle School rules apply in this class. NO hats on during class. 2. There are to be no visible cell phones, ipods, or electronic devices unless Mrs. Banker gives permission. 3. Each student is totally responsible for his/her own actions. Discipline is handled on an individual basis. 4. Derogatory comments and inappropriate language of any sort WILL NOT be tolerated in this class. 5. You are also being graded on your participation as listeners. Please be courteous. 6. All heads must be up at all times. I won’t put my head down when you are speaking either. 7. When using a restroom pass, students will leave their phone/ipod with Mrs. Banker as collateral. It will be returned after the student returns from the restroom. 8. Food and drink are not permitted in class, unless distributed by Mrs. Banker. You MAY bring and drink water in class. No other beverages are permitted. 9. You are NOT to line up at the door near the end of class time. Please remain seated until you are dismissed. The entire scheduled class period is used for class time. The clock does not dismiss you – the teacher does. 10. Zero/Zero Rule: “Cheaters” and “Cheatees” will both be given a 0 on the assignment. If you are allowing someone to cheat off of your paper you are penalized the same as if you were cheating. We are looking forward to a great year! Feel free to contact us at any time.
