Social Studies
Families Now and Long Ago, Near
and Far
The first-grade year builds on the
concepts developed in kindergarten by
focusing on the individual as a member
of a family. Students begin to
understand how families lived long ago
and how they live in other cultures.
They develop concepts about how the
world is organized spatially through
beginning map skills. They build the
foundation for understanding principles
of government and their roles as
citizens. •  http://education.ohio.gov/getattachment/

Enrichment Practices
1st grade focus - A year of Imagining
We Grow Thinkers in Dublin City Schools!
We grow thinkers by immersing all students in a school-wide culture committed to
the development of thinking skills through thoughtful engagement with big ideas
and complex problems. Through explicit support from a collaborative instructional
team, students blossom into thinkers who are able to independently apply thinking
habits in complex and creative ways.
www.dublinschools.net/gifted.aspx
The 6 Habits of Thinkers:
1. Ask questions
2. Collaborate with others
3. Create and Innovate
4. Persevere
5. Think flexibly
6. Communicates ideas with confidence
Within our classroom, we will be offering enriching,
challenging, collaborative, problem based activities to stretch
students!
It’s Snack Time! Our class will have an afternoon snack. Each student is responsible for
bringing his/her own snack each day if desired. Due to some food
allergies in our building, we have narrowed our snack choices to the
following five (5) items or categories. - Cheese squares or string cheese
- Plain Cheerios
- Plain Pretzels
- Vegetables- carrots, celery sticks, peppers, etc
- Fruits- (cut up, finger food) grapes, blueberries, raisins, apple slices, etc
Students must be able to eat the food with their fingers and open their
own snack bags so please make sure they are packaged appropriately. We
don’t have time to peel fruit. Students may bring in a water bottle to
keep in their backpack. No other drinks are permitted in the classroom.
