W Welcome to Fourth Grade! Mrs. Sara Miles Indian Run Elementary Top 10 List for Mrs. Miles’ Class Welcome to fourth grade! This is my 7th year at IRE. I previously taught at Riverside Elementary for 9 years. I am married with two children. Maya is 11 and Layla is 8. They attend Sells and IRE! We feel very fortunate to work and live in this great community. #10 Fourth Grade is My Passion! Fourth grade was my favorite year when I was in school. I tell the students stories of my year in 4th grade and share my excitement about teaching with them. I like to say that, “I teach 4th graders, not fourth grade!” #9 Communication is KEY! I enjoy receiving feedback from parents and welcome open communication by email and phone. I prefer meeting in person to everything else. miles_sara@dublinschools.net or 614-764-5928 The school day is a time for me to give your children my complete attention and focus. Please respect the fact you may not hear back from me immediately. #8 I Have High Expectations for Our Whole TEAM...Myself, Parents, and Students! In order for our students to have a successful year, we will all need to work together and recognize the responsibilities we all share. Our classroom is made up of four core beliefs; Respect, Responsibility, Reciprocity, and Resilience. We also learn and live by the motto, “We CAN Do Hard Things!” #7 We Are All About ROUTINE! We will follow a daily schedule. This helps with scheduling class switches, students who leave the classroom, and scheduling appointments. This does not mean that what we do within that time is the same everyday...that part is very flexible. My hope is that I make it very difficult for anyone to not be successful in this classroom! MRS. MILES’ DAILY SCHEDULE 2015-2016 9:05-9:20 am MORNING ROUTINE/CHECK-IN/MORNING MATH 9:20-10:30 am MATH WORKSHOP 10:30-10:50 am begin WORD STUDY 10:55-11:40 pm RELATED ARTS (A DayLibrary, B Day-Music, C Day- P.E., D Day Art) 11:45-11:55 finish WORD STUDY 12:00-12:45 pm LUNCH/RECESS 12:50-1:40 pm SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES 1:50-3:30 pm READ ALOUD/ INDEPENDENT READING READING/WRITING WORKSHOP 3:30-3:40 pm PACK UP/PLANNERS ! ! ! #6 Information Should ALWAYS Be Readily Available To You. I also send a weekly email to update you on the upcoming week and previous week. I try to get these out on Fridays (or Saturday mornings while I am drinking my coffee :) ***Please make sure I have your current/best email. I will send a test email soon! #5 Fair Is Not Equal... Each student has different needs and ability levels. Some students may need more time, resources, assistance, etc. Fair is each child getting what THEY need. Students will learn that if they say, “that’s not fair!” I will usually reply, “fair is not always everyone getting the same thing!” :) I have high expectations for ALL students. Some students may need more support to reach those expectations that’s o.k.! #4 Fourth Grade Is a Big Year For Gaining More Independence and Responsibility. Students will need to come to class prepared each day with the materials and work they need to be successful (planner, homework, reading log, lunch, etc.) Excuses should become less and less as the year progresses. My hope is that you see this carry over at home :) #3 We Will Work Hard, but We Will Also Have FUN! ! All Fourth Grade Curriculum can be found on DCS website...once on the website go to the department tab, select learning and teaching, then choose elementary curriculum. Letter grades begin this year! ! ! ! We will rotate classes for science and social studies. I will be teaching landforms, earth changes, and geography. Mrs. Guehl will be teaching energy (electricity, matter and ecosystems), Mrs. Mathews will be teaching Ohio history and regions, and Mrs. VanDyke and Ms. Dempsey will be teaching American history. #3 We Will Work Hard, but We Will Also Have FUN! con’t ! Homework is assigned M-Thurs. It is usually math, reading, and periodically science or social studies. Homework should take an average of 20-40 mins (including reading). For fun we will celebrate birthdays, go on field trips, have “student of the week” opportunities, and chances for lots of rewards and incentives. When planning for a birthday, we currently we have 22 students in our classroom. You can read the new guidelines set for celebrating birthdays on the IRE website. Please, no food treats...please consider choosing a book, new game for the class, or other non-edible goodies. Thank you! If your child is absent, please make sure to either call or email Lee Hamill at 614.718.8776 or hamill_lee@dublinschools.net #2 I Honor Individuality and Uniqueness No two students are the same and I try to foster a welcoming environment that encourages students to think critically, have their own opinions, and feel comfortable sharing their ideas within the classroom. #1 I Teach With a Parent’s Heart. The way I parent reflects the way I teach. This year, your child becomes my child and they will remain that way forever. As with parenting, sometimes people disagree about different approaches and practices. It is important to remember that I always have the students’ best interest at heart. Love and Logic.com or Facebook Page...great resource!
