8th Grade Curriculum Night An 8th Grader’s Day ■ There will be 8 periods including lunch in the day. (50 minutes) ■ Example Period 1 – Language Arts Period 2 – Math Period 3 – Science Lunch 4 – Related Arts Period 5 – Related Arts Period 6 – Lunch Period 7– Social Studies Period 8 – Fifth CORE Class Science •Science 8 is the final fundamental MS science class designed and sequenced with 6th and 7th grade science classes to help students progress in their base knowledge of earth sciences and key concepts that lay the foundation for success in future science classes •Qualifying students will have the advanced option to enroll in Physical Science, in place of Science 8. •The district has set qualifications based on multiple data points •The school counselors will contact students who qualify for this option •Students who complete Physical Science will receive high school credit upon completion of the course Math ■Students will be placed in the appropriate course based on their current math placement ■Students who complete Algebra I, Geometry, or higher, will receive high school credit upon completion of the course ■Any course beyond Geometry is taken at the HS in the AM prior to starting their school day at KMS Math Sequences Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Math 7 Math 8 HS Algebra I* Math 7/8 HS Algebra I* HS Geometry* Math 8 HS Algebra I* HS Geometry* The Fifth Core Period ■ Students must choose ONE: World Language ■ Art 8 (full year) ■ Gateway to Technology (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) ■ World Languages ■ School Day MS 8:28 - 3:08 HS 7:55 - 2:42 Level I - World Languages ■ These courses will be included in the calculation of the HS GPA. ■ Spanish I offered at KMS (no previous experience in Spanish is required) ■ Other Level I classes to be offered at a high school include: German I, Japanese I, Chinese I, and French I. If music students have an additional trimester left to fill they may also choose from the list below: ■ Tech Solutions ■ Physical Education ■ Art 8 Survey New Gifted Option - CogEd 8 CogEd 8 - Continued ■ ■ CogEd 8: This course, offered during study center time as a single trimester option for 8th graders, is an elective for students who have met the state criteria for identification in the area of Superior Cognitive Ability. Students must have been identified in grade 3 or later on an Ohio Department of Education approved ability assessment. Any student who enrolled in Dublin City Schools after their third grade year must provide a qualifying cognitive abilities score that is no older than 24 months, per state requirement. Student’s guidance counselor will notify student if he/she meets the criteria for this elective option.
