METHODIST UNIVERSITY: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTRE
Mindset
Since Methodist College became Methodist University in 2006, the faculty and staff have implemented
a Quality Enhancement Plan and completed a self-study for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools. A Strategic Planning Committee has begun drafting a new five-year
Strategic Plan for the university, which will enhance the more than 70 academic majors and concentrations
Methodist now offers in five schools: School of Arts and Humanities, Reeves School of Business and
Economics, School of Public Affairs, School of Science and Development, and School of Graduate Studies.
A General Education Committee is studying the university’s liberal arts core curriculum requirements. The
Board of Trustees has made the development of a “culture of excellence” its top priority for Methodist
University.
The Past
Methodist University was chartered as Methodist College November 1, 1956. The school opened in
1960 and graduated its first class in 1964. On the eve of its 50th birthday, the Board of Trustees voted to
change the name of the school to Methodist University. Methodist now offers master’s degrees in physician
assistant studies, justice administration, and business administration. In March 2009, the university
published From Cotton Field to University, a history of the school’s first 50 years (1956-2006) written over
a six-year period by Bill Billings.
The Present
In 2009, the faculty, staff and students at Methodist University are working hard to ensure that the
school maintains its reputation for academic excellence and continues to attract more and better students. In
2007, the school opened the Nimocks Fitness Center and a Science Building addition. Enrollment has
leveled off at about 2,100 students: 1,500 in the day program and 600 in the evening. Enrollment in online
courses has grown to 250.
Methodist continues to excel in intercollegiate athletics, competing in 19 intercollegiate sports. In
2008-09, Methodist participated in two NCAA Division III National Tournaments at the team level: men’s
golf and women’s golf.
Major gifts from persons who support Methodist’s mission of developing the mind, body, and spirit
have reached record levels in recent years, making scholarships and new buildings possible. Construction is
now under way on the William F. Bethune Center for the Visual Arts and a football field house.
Methodist faculty, staff, and students participate in numerous civic organizations and service projects
in the Fayetteville area. About 3,000 alumni live in Fayetteville and Cumberland County.
The Future
During the twenty-first century, and under the new leadership of President Ben Hancock, Methodist
University will hold fast to its liberal arts tradition and Christian values, while embracing new technology
as a means of enhancing lifelong learning. Additional graduate programs and in-service training courses
will attract new students. MU at Night and online courses will serve increasing numbers of non-traditional
students.
Methodist will remain a valuable community resource and a center for the cultural arts. The Theatre,
Art and Music Departments; the Center for Entrepreneurship; Southern Writers Symposium; Fayetteville
Symphony; Cumberland Oratorio Singers; and summer sports camps will bring thousands to the campus
annually.
Those associated with Methodist University believe a bright future awaits students who choose Truth
and Virtue (our credo) and are “liberally educated” to live full and meaningful lives.

x
The office is responsible for all external fundraising for the University. This includes the annual fund, capital needs,
endowed scholarships, planned/estate gifts, campaigns, federal appropriations and other projects as needed.
x
Alumni relations maintains communication and relationships with graduates/former students, and is responsible for
planning all alumni events, including Homecoming Weekend, editing the alumni section of the University’s web site,
maintaining the online alumni directory, coordinating the annual alumni fund drive, and providing affinity programs.
x
All charitable gifts made to Methodist University must be processed through the Gifts Records Coordinator in the
Development Office.
x

to assist in research funding sources and grant opportunities for all campus entities.

approximately 4,379 former students of the MU (non-graduates).
x Faculty and staff are encouraged to update us whenever they receive information on alumni or former students.
Maintaining an accurate database is vital to our success in connecting with alumni.
x In 2007, the Alumni Office established Monarch Connections, an online community exclusively for alumni, faculty
and staff. All Methodist University Faculty and those Staff who work closely with students are encouraged to log in
to Monarch Connections, located on the Alumni page of the website. You can look up a former student's address,
phone, and e-mail and correspond with them, and view their Class Notes and Mentor Profiles. You can also search
our alumni by class year, state, and other criteria. Monarch Connections is offered at no charge in a secure, passwordprotected environment. To set up your account, log on or call Lauren Wike at ext. 7167.
x The Alumni Office sends out a newsletter to our alumni on a monthly basis. If you have information that you wish to
share with our alumni or if you simply want to make them aware of an upcoming event, please let us know and we
will add it to the newsletter.
x The Alumni Office is interested in knowing about and assisting with Alumni gatherings, whether it is related to
academics, athletics or simply social. Please contact Lauren Wike at ext. 7167.
70
x The alumni speaker series brings our alumni back on the campus to speak to your class or club about their experiences
or occupation. It is an opportunity for our alumni to give back to Methodist University. If you are interested in
having alum speak to your class please contact Lauren Wike at ext. 7167.
x For mailings and other activities, we can provide address information, segmented if necessary. A list can be e-mailed
to you in any format you desire. Please e-mail Krista Lee at klee@methodist.edu.
