ASCRC Writing Committee Minutes, 3/1/11 Members Present: G. Burns, N. Hinman, M. Medvetz, T. Russell, M. Semanoff, K. Zoellner Members Excused/Absent: J. DeSoto Ex-Officio Members Present K. Ryan, K. Webster The meeting was called to order at 1:10 p.m. The minutes from 2/15/11 were approved. Although there was not a quorum and the 2/22/11 meeting, the notes were discussed. Communication Item: Professor Silverman resigned due to a course conflict. A message will be sent to the Social Science chairs to find a replacement. Business Item: The writing course distribution was approved (appended below). The rolling review of writing courses will start in 2012- 2013. Discussion continued regarding UDWPA recommendations. Many programs have been contacting the Writing Center to get the UDWPA results to include in their assessment documents. If the UDWPA is eliminated instructors will need assistance in imbedding assessment into their courses. Specific writing assessment needs will need to be identified and incorporated into current work. The Committed may need to address the common misperceptions on campus in its justification of the recommendation. How will program level assessment be equal to the UDWPA in terms of quality and student accountability? What is the consequence to students? Should the recommendation include redirecting resources for courses to improve students writing in addition to program level assessment? The Committee may need to anticipate resistance and provide examples and data to persuade faculty that the recommendation has value. It may suggest a pilot project as well. Director Ryan will send the Assessment guide from the University of Massachusetts. Barbara Wolvoord is an excellent resource for writing across the Curriculum. A member from the Assessment Committee should be invited to the Writing Committee for input. If the committee considers allowing seniors to submit a GRE score in place of taking the UDWPA it will need to determine an appropriate score (likely a 4.5). There will not be a meeting next week. The meeting was adjourned at 2:03 p.m. Writing Course Review Distribution English (34) ENEX 200 LIT 110 (ENLT 120L) LIT 120L (ENLT 121L) LIT 201L (ENLT 201) LIT 210L (ENLT 224L) LIT 211L (ENLT 225L) LIT 220L (ENLT 217L) LIT 221L (ENLT 218L) LIT 222L (ENLT 219L) WRIT 120L (WTS 121L) WRIT 121 (WTS 115) WRIT 221 WRIT 222 (FOR 220) WRIT 240E (WTS 240E) WRT 110 (WTS 120L) Advanced Composition Introduction to Literature (Introduction to Critical Interpretation) Poetry (Introduction to Poetry) Introduction to Literary Studies LIT 300 (ENLT 301) LIT 301 (ENLT 323) LIT 304 (ENLT 327) LIT 314 (ENLT 335) Literary Criticism (Applied Literary Criticism) American Literature I (American Literature to 1865) American Literature II American Literature: 1865 to Present British Literature: Medieval through Early Modern British Literature: Enlightenment to Romantics British Literature: Victorian to Contemporary Poetry (Introduction to Poetry) Introduction to Technical Writing (Technical Writing) Intermediate Technical Writing Technical Approach to Writing (Technical Writing) Ethics and Rhetoric: Writing Arguments on Contemporary Issues Introduction to Literature Introduction to Critical Interpretation Studies in Literary Forms U.S. Writers of Color (Literature by US Writers of Color) The American Novel LIT 315 (ENLT 331) LIT 316 (ENLT 373) LIT 327 (ENLT 320) LIT 331 (ENLT 321) LIT 335 (ENLT 336) LIT 342 (ENLT 338) LIT343 (ENLT 337) LIT 353 (ENLT 353) LIT355 (ENLT 355) LIT 362 (ENLT 334) LIT 369 (ENLT 369) LIT 373 (ENLT 371) LIT 375 (ENLT 322) LIT 376 (ENLT 325) LIT 494 (ENLT 401) Voices of the American Renaissance Topics in Postcolonial Studies Shakespeare Major Author/s (Studies in a Major Author) Women and Literature (American Women Writers) Montana Writers (Montana Literature) African American Literature Milton British Romanticism (British Romantic Literature) Postwar Poetry Short Fiction (Advanced Studies in the Novella and Short Fiction) Literature & the Environment Literary History (Studies in Literary History) Literature and Other Disciplines (Studies in Literature and Other Disciplines: The Bible as Literature) Seminar: Literature Capstone (Capstone Seminar in Literature) Humanities and Fine Art (42) ART 203L ART 303L ART 368 ART 384 AAS 372 AAS 374 AAS 450 HC 121L HISTA 103 HSTR 103 HSTR 300 (HIST 300) HSTR 401 LS 151L/152L MCLG 251L MCLG 252 MUS 325H PHL 311E (PHIL 300E) THTR 330H (DRAM 320) Introduction to Art Criticism Contemporary Art and Art Criticism Latin American Art Renaissance Art African American Identity African American Religious Experience Prayer and Civil Rights Ways of Knowing Honors American History Honors European Civilization to 1715 The Historian's Craft The Great Historians Introduction to the Humanities The Epic Greek Drama: Politics On-stage History of Music II Moral Philosophy Theatre History ART 303L DANC 494 THTR 331H (DRAM 321) GRMN 351H GRMN 352H HSTA 418 HSTA 419 HSTA 420 HSTA 455 HSTA 462 HSTR 414 HSTR 436 HSTR 457 HSTR 470(HIST 437) Contemporary Art and Art Criticism Seminar/ Workshop (Junior/Senior Dance Seminar) Theatre History II JPNS 311 JPNS 312 JPNS 431 MAR 450 MCLG 494 MUSI 415 (MUS 424) MUSI 416 (MUS 436) MUSI 417 (MUS 437) PHL 499 (PHIL 480) Classical Japanese Literature in English Translation Japanese Literature from Medieval to Modern Times Postwar Japanese Literature Topics in Film and Media Seminar in Russian Studies Music of the 20th Century to the Present German Culture to 1900 German Culture from 1900 to the Present Women and Slavery Southern Women in Black and White America Divided, 1848-1865 Indians, Bison, and Horse Regionalism and The Rocky Mountain West Early Modern Britain Latin American Workers and Labor History The World of Anna Karenina The Dynamics of Diplomacy Topics in Music History Cultural Studies in Music Senior Seminar Social Science (39) AASC 167H COMM 410 ECNS 433 (ECON 440) NAS 200 NASL 202L Nature and Society Communication in Personal relationships Economics of the Environment (Environmental Economics) Native American Studies Research and Writing Methods Oral and Written Traditions of Native America ANTH 314 ANTH 400 ANTH 402 ANTH 448 ANTH 450 ANTH 451 ANTH 455 COMM 377 COMM 410 Principles of Forensic Anthropology History of Anthropology Advanced Anthropological Statistics Quantitative Ethnographic Methods Archaeological Theory (2/26/09 follow-up: MacDonald) Cultural Resource Management Artifact Analysis Rhetoric, Nature, Environmentalism Communication in Personal Relationships COMM 421 COMM 422 COMM 424 COMM 455 COMM 480 COMM 481 ECNS 488-489 EVST 302 EVST 305L EVST 367 EVST 487 GPHY 433(GEOG 333) GPHY 335 GPHY 499 LING 473 NAS 494 LING 484 PSCI 400 PSYX 400 PSYX 320 (PSYC 320) SOCI 441 SOCI 438 SOCI 460 SOCI 488 Communication in Nonprofit Organization Communication and Technology Risk, Crisis and Communication Rhetorical Criticism and Theory The Rhetorical Construction of "Woman" The Rhetoric of U.S. Women's Activism, 1960 -
