Drexel University College of Medicine Hahnemann University Hospital PODIATRIC SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM GENERAL SURGERY ROTATION Goals: The resident will be fully incorporated into the general surgical team and assume comprehensive care for a large number of patients. The resident will be expected to have broad experience in managing many challenging cases involving ischemic conditions of the limbs and organ systems as well as general surgical cases. The resident will become familiar with arterial disease and emphasis on diagnosis, medical and surgical management of vascular disease and general surgery cases. Competencies: The resident will be able to: 1. Place access lines (IV, CVP, Permacath) 2. Manage wound care 3. Competence in extremity vascular examination 4. Evaluate and manage surgical patients 5. Evaluate and manage fluid and electrolyte balance in patients 6. Use pertinent diagnostic modalities for acute and elective surgical procedures 7. Use sound general surgical principles in the operating room 8. Assist during procedures 9. Manage pre and post operative procedures and complications with patients 10. Suture, retract and perform surgical procedures
