Course Description:
This course is designed for students working as technicians on tour with the Montana
Repertory Theatre. Students will serve in a variety of technical capacities under real life
touring conditions in assorted venues across the United States. Students will travel with the
company setting up, running and striking the production on a daily basis for the length of the
tour. Students will work cooperatively with professional technicians, stage managers and
actors from the rehearsal process through the final strike.
Course Objectives:
The objectives of this course include an ability to work under intense theatre conditions
created by the inherent rigors of touring theatre. Students will demonstrate their ability to
think and act under pressure and make intelligent, safe and informed decisions regarding the
daily operations of mounting a touring show in different venues across the country. Students
will learn to work independently and with a close knit company, while maintaining
professionalism and collaboration throughout the tour.
Grading:
Grading will be based on the quality of the work, ability to work under pressure, ability to
communicate with the company and the local crews, ability to maintain the quality and
professionalism of the production throughout the tour, and the ability to think quickly and
creatively.
Attendance:
Students must complete the tour and be an integral, beneficial component of the team
throughout the tour. It is required that students will work every day that there is a call.
All Theatre & Dance students must have an in-depth knowledge of the practices and
procedures outlined in the School of Theatre & Dance Handbook. The Handbook is available
online at http://www.sfa.umt.edu/drama/index.html.
Academic Misconduct and the Student Conduct Code
All students must practice academic honesty. Academic misconduct is subject to an academic
penalty by the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University. All students need to
be familiar with the Student Conduct code. The Code is available for review online at:
www.umt.edu/SA/VPSA/Index.cfm/page/1321.
