White-tailed Deer Research Crew Leaders (2): Northwest or South-central Missouri Agency: University of Missouri – Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences Location: Northwest or South-central Missouri Job Category: Full-time positions Salary: $31,200 per year; housing provided; positions are benefits eligible Start Date: 12/15/2014; negotiable Application Deadline: 09/15/2014 Description: The University of Missouri (MU) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) are recruiting 2 research crew leaders to study survival, recruitment, and movement patterns of white-tailed deer in northwest or south-central Missouri from 12/2014 – 06/2020. Crew leaders will be responsible for supervising research technicians and coordinating field research activities. Among other duties, research crew leaders will lead efforts to capture and radio-mark deer, investigate mortalities, locate fawns, interact with Missouri landowners, and provide frequent updates to project collaborators. Work will be conducted cooperatively with MU and MDC researchers. In addition to field activities, crew leaders will be responsible for data entry, maintaining equipment inventory logs, and the preparation of progress reports detailing research activities. Crew leaders will work both alone and as part of a research team, and will be required to work long hours outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions and on weekends. A field vehicle will be provided to conduct research activities and housing is provided as well. Crew leader positions are benefits eligible. Qualifications A Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Ecology or related field is required; a Master’s Degree is preferred. Previous leadership and field experience is required. Prior field experience capturing, handling, and radio-marking large mammals is highly preferred, but not required. Experience with Microsoft Office software and ArcGIS is highly preferred. Crew leaders must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and possess a strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills. Crew leaders must possess exceptional leadership qualities and the ability to coordinate field efforts to meet research project goals and objectives. Crew leaders must work effectively both alone with minimal supervision and as part of a research team. Applicants must possess exceptional inter-personal skills, including the ability to 1 communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. Crew leaders must be able to work in remote locations and conduct field work that is often strenuous. White-tailed deer capture will occur during winter and crew leaders will often have to wait in blinds for extended periods of time in cold weather until capture events occur. Crew leaders must be able to safely operate Clover traps, rocket-nets, all-terrain vehicles, 4wheel drive vehicles (both on- and off-roads), and other field equipment. Experience using a compass and hand-held GPS units is desirable. Applicants must be physically-fit and able to carry field and personal equipment. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Crew leaders must be able to share field housing with research technicians.
