DPRC Wildlife Technician - Position Description
Type of Position: Seasonal Park Worker III. Maximum of 520 hours annually
Pay Range: $10.98 per hour, 32 hours per week
Position Title: Wildlife Technician II
Duration: Approximately March 29, 2015 until approximately July 16, 2015.
Position Summary: The position will assist the Natural Areas Coordinator and Assistant Natural
Areas Coordinator in the management of the natural areas (10,000 acres) within the Milwaukee
County Park System. The position will primarily work on conducting baseline wildlife
assessments of various species as part of the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern Baseline
Wildlife Population Assessment. The position will also participate on a wide variety of land
management related activities.
Primary Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):
1. Wildlife assessments to be conducted by this position include amphibian egg
mass surveys, aquatic funnel trapping for salamanders and crayfish, visual
encounter surveys, ephemeral pond inventories, breeding and migratory bird
surveys, snake cover object surveys, turtle basking surveys, turtle trapping
surveys, and wildlife camera monitoring.
2. Collect and manage photo vouchers and/or voucher specimens throughout the
duration of the assessment period.
3. Utilize and maintain all survey equipment including aquatic funnel traps, hoop
nets, trail cameras, hip waders, binoculars, specimen collection equipment, and
ephemeral pond inventory equipment including thermometers and aquatic
scoops.
4. Ensure that all equipment used in aquatic and/or semi-aquatic environments is
properly sterilized between sites/uses.
5. Utilize computers to enter and organize data, scan copies of raw data, track
assessment work, compose reports, create informational brochures, and archive
photo vouchers.
6. Utilize GPS hand-held unit to collect data points throughout assessment period.
7. Enter all assessment data into an ArcGIS 10.2 database prior to November 1,
2015.
8. Engage with the Natural Areas Program volunteer base by incorporating
assessments into the Natural Areas Citizen Science Program via educational
workdays and the Natural Areas Internship Program.
9. Serves as field liaison between Milwaukee County DPRC and not-for profits,
educational institutions, private citizens, and other government agencies in
regards to the Milwaukee Estuary AOC Baseline Wildlife Population Assessment
project.
10. Engages with new and existing partnerships through community outreach and
education activities such as public presentations, media outreach, leading
environmental field trips, and giving lectures to local universities in regards to
the Milwaukee Estuary AOC Baseline Wildlife Population Assessment project.
11. Assists the Assistant Natural Areas Coordinator in the further development of a
formalized citizen-science program within the Natural Areas Program for
volunteers, Natural Areas Interns, and seasonal staff.
12. Assists the Natural Areas Coordinator and Assistant Natural Areas Coordinator
on all other ecological restoration duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor degree or higher in a Natural Sciences Field
2. Valid Wisconsin Drivers License (Class D)
3. Experience using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
4. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in adverse conditions.
5. Candidates for this position need to possess the ability to think on their feet, be highly
adaptable to varying work environments, be organized and detail orientated.
Preferred Qualifications
1. First Aid/CPR Certified
2. Practical experience with ArcGIS and GPS software
3. Cofrin Center for Biodiversity Bird Certification (Level 3)
4. Working knowledge of Wisconsin flora and fauna.
5. Ability to read and understand land descriptions and/or maps in order to locate unique
land features (i.e. ephemeral ponds).
6. Knowledge of standard restoration ecology techniques, such as reforestation, prescribed
fire, wildlife habitat management, and/or invasive species control and two (2) years of
practical experience implementing them.
7. Experience working with external partners to achieve shared goals.
8. Experience working for or with government agencies.
9. Experience using a trailer.
