Forest County Potawatomi Position Classification and Description POSITION TITLE: CLASSIFICATION: DEPARTMENT: SUPERVISOR: GRADE: Botany/Wetlands Technician Non-Exempt Natural Resources Botany/Wetlands Program Manager NE9 Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Botany/Wetland Program Manager, collects data that is used to determine the health and quality of the plant communities and wetland ecosystems on Tribal lands. Maintains accurate records and creates necessary reports. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Collects biological and physical data from plant and wetland communities on Tribal lands. Works with State, Federal and other Tribal environmental professionals to integrate environmental programs with Tribal goals and cultural values. Independently performs statistical data analyses and summarizes findings into scientific reports. Collects and identifies plants and contributes to Tribal biological reference collections. Assists in wetland delineation and restoration projects. Assists in invasive species control and eradication Assists Natural Resources Department staff in conducting environmental investigations, and offers recommendations to advance departmental programs and improve Tribal natural resources. Assists in supervision and scheduling summer youth workers, and volunteers. Attends meetings, trainings, and conferences as needed or required. Assists department staff with education and outreach activities. Promotes a safe working environment and maintains departmental equipment to assure proper operation. Preserves and enhances the quality of the plant communities and wetland ecosystems found on Tribal lands to ensure the natural environment can be shared by future generations. Contributes to environmental assessments to include: field work, research, analysis, and report writing. Provides technical assistance to other environmental staff, other departments, committees, groups, and community members on programs and projects. Establishes, maintains, processes, and updates files, records, and/or other documents. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required. Performs other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences or Natural Resources and one year experience in botany, wetland science or a related field. Experience in plant identification using taxonomic keys, invasive species control and species management. Valid driver’s license. Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background investigation. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable, current federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Federal Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act Section 404. Knowledge of the principles of environmental conservation and management. Knowledge of plant collection policies and procedures. Appreciation of American Indian culture and values. Ability and enthusiasm to work as a member of a team with an interest and willingness to achieve Tribal environmental goals. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to research and compile data relating to natural resource management. Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently and meet deadlines. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions Ability to exercise independent judgment. Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds. Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, requirements, ordinances and legislation. Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines. Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment. Skill in statistical compilation and analysis. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; taste or smell; have manual and finger dexterity; stoop, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to crawl, climb heights, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, balance, push/pull, and carry. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level and in outside environments with moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, and requires following basic safety precautions. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. *Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license and be authorized as eligible for coverage under the Tribe’s Insurance prior to an actual start date. *Must maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license as a condition of employment. *Must pass a background check, which will be performed on all applicants. *Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.
