The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest is seeking a
Forestry Tech (Timber Sale Prep) Student Trainee in support
of the Forest Timber Management Program. The position is
located at the Yampa Ranger District, located in Yampa,
Colorado.

Position Title: Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep) Student Trainee / GS-0499-04
Tour of Duty: This position will be advertised through Pathways as a Student Intern (Timber Sale Prep) Indefinite position (without a Not-ToExceed date), which allows for non-competitive conversion to a permanent employee after successful completion of education degree
requirements and on the job training. While the student intern completes the degree, the work schedule will occur around their school schedule.
Once the degree and job training are completed, this position will convert to a permanent fulltime GS-0460-5/7/9 Sale Prep Forester appointment
with the work schedule year round.
Duty Station: Yampa, Colorado
Housing: There is housing.

Position Duties:
The purpose of this position is to perform work individually or as a crew member in support of the unit, timber, silviculture, recreation, fire, wildlife
and/or range programs.
Key Duties Include:
Timber
Marks clearly specified softwood and hardwood trees for cutting as sawlogs, pulpwood, posts, poles, etc., according to prescriptions. Measures
tree diameters and heights: and observes defects under guidance of supervisor.
Traverses proposed timber sale units using plans and prescriptions, topographic maps, aerial photos, compass, Global Positioning System devices,
etc. Assists forester or technicians in the layout of; logging units, temporary roads, locations, etc.
As a member of a timber cruising crew, runs compass lines, paces or measures distances, marks and numbers plots, measures heights and
diameters and records data on field data recorders or cards.
Silviculture
Leads a small crew in the tasks of measuring and laying out the boundary of small areas designated for planting, site preparation and timber stand
improvement contracts. Personally performs work, or inspects work performed under site preparation, planting and timber stand improvement
contracts following established procedures and which involve standard requirements and are limited in size. Checks planted areas for seedling
survival rate and stocking and records information. Calls non-compliance to attention of his/her supervisor.
Other
Position will also gain experience and become familiar with Recreation, Wildlife, Range, and Fire programs.
