Upon course completion,
students will be able to:
1. Perform community
assessments related to
cultural, social, natural and
economic resource
availability and help
communities design
sustainable activities to
meet goals based on
resource availability.
2. Apply sustainability
principles, methods,
strategies and techniques to
better provide basic needs
for individuals and
communities using local
resources in cost effective,
culturally appropriate,
healthy and environmentally
friendly ways.
3. Develop sustainable land
use plans that can serve as
models of integrated
environmental and cultural
diversity, including gender
and ethnic equity.

The course includes more than
150 hours of class lecture,
interactive discussion time and
hands-on activities that apply
class topics in the field.

Credits and Application Deadline
Participants enroll for three credits in
International Studies 391(audit option
available at the same price). Students from
all majors are encouraged to apply. No
prerequisites. Students will also
receive a Permaculture Design
Certificate upon course completion.
Priority application deadline is December
1, 2013. Hurry, space is limited to 20 students!

The application fee is $50 for UW-Stevens Point
continuing students and $100 for all others.

DEADLINES
COST: $3,650-$4,150
(Estimate for up to 20 students).
The program cost includes airfare,
lectures, meals, in-country
transportation, accommodations,
UW System health/travel insurance,
and 3 credits tuition for a
Wisconsin undergraduate resident
(Minnesota residents: $70
surcharge (approx.) with approved
reciprocity; nonresidents: $250
surcharge).
The priority application
deadline for summer 2014
programs is December 1,
2013. We strongly advise
early application as some
programs may close
before the deadline.
Applications may be taken
after December 1 if space is
available.
NOTE: Late applicants may
have a higher airfare cost.
LODGING AND TRAVEL
Accommodations are rustic and will
include camping. Participants are
encouraged to bring a tent and
sleeping bag. A host family stay in a
small village for 3-4 nights may be
included. Field activities will be in
small groups. Expect to participate
and interact with Kenyan students
and community members, be
flexible and take in wonderful
sights, sounds, and smells.
Travel in Kenya will be by bus. Field
clothes and sturdy shoes/boots are
recommended. Due to the large
amount of field work in this course,
good physical condition is
highly recommended.
