Program Highlights
Visit and view some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world.
Some places of interest
Explore rain forests, cloud forests, active volcanoes, estuaries, coral reefs,
mangroves, dry tropical forests, beaches, banana and coffee plantations. Observe
the incredible array of flora and fauna in this small, but diverse country. Identify
several hundred species of birds. See howler monkeys, leatherback turtles, sloths,
crocodiles, and if you’re lucky, a jaguarundi!

Not enough? You will also learn about issues surrounding ecotourism and
sustainable development, including exposure to the Costa Rican model for
managing natural resources in a tropical country.

Forest Reserve
Experience the traditions of democracy, peace and hospitality in the rich cultural
heritage of Costa Rica as you travel to and fro by bus and boat, with great hiking
and snorkeling in between.

Credit and Application Deadline
Participants enroll for three credits in Natural Resources 407/607 Costa Rica Tropical Ecology
(audit option available at the same price). No prerequisites and Environmental Literacy designation applies.
Graduate credit is an additional cost.
Priority application by April 1, 2015. Often spots are open after April 1; please check for available spots.

Important information
Cost: $4,450–$4,950
(2015-16 cost estimate for up to 25 students.) The program cost includes
airfare (Chicago-San Jose-Chicago), lectures, accommodations, most
meals, in-country transportation, UW System health/travel insurance and
three credits tuition for a Wisconsin undergraduate resident (Minnesota
Residents: $70 surcharge with approved reciprocity; nonresidents: $250
surcharge).

Deposit
Return completed application to CCC Room 108 with a $50 non-refundable
application fee ($100 for non UW-Stevens Point students).
A separate non-refundable $400 arrangement fee is due at the time of
acceptance. This fee is applied against program cost.

Lodging and travel
Most overnights are in hotels, lodges and medium-end eco-resorts. There
is tent camping for at least three nights. Expect to participate and interact
with up to 25 other students, adjust to a busy pace, be flexible and take
in wonderful sights, sounds and smells.
Travel will be by bus and boat. Most parks and reserves are best seen
by foot on hiking trails up to 12 kilometers in length and of various terrain
(hilly, muddy, rocky). Wading to boats may be a necessity. Good
physical condition is highly recommended.
Important Note: International Programs reserves the right to cancel, surcharge or to
alter the program due to the exchange rate and airline price fluctuation.
