Instructor: Victor Camacho Office: LCB 317 E-mail: camacho@math.utah.edu Office Hours: Wednesday: 12:30 AM – 1:30 PM Prerequisites: The prerequisite for this class is a Math ACT score of at least 18, a Math SAT score of at least 430, or a passing grade in Math 990. If you do not meet one of these criteria, then you will not be allowed to take this course. Course: Math 1010 is an introductory course largely intended as a prerequisite for Math 1030 (Quantitative Reasoning) or Math 1050 (College Algebra). During the semester we will cover the following topics: Fundamentals of algebra, linear equations and inequalities, graphs and functions, system of equations, polynomials, rational expressions, radicals and complex number, quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. The goal of this course is to assist you in understanding these basic concepts with an eye toward developing more general mathematical reasoning ability. Students are expected to read each section in the textbook that is covered in the lectures. Homework: Homework assignments will be handled through WebWork (see course website for more details), an online software that allows you to submit your answers to homework questions electronically and get immediate feedback. Homework sets are assigned weekly and are due before 11:00 PM every Wednesday night. Late work will not be accepted unless sufficient written documentation can be provided to verify your unusual circumstances. Your lowest homework score will not be considered when calculating your final grade. Quizzes: An in-class quiz will be administered every Thursday of the semester at the beginning of class. Each quiz will consist of two or three problems selected from the homework assignment or in class problems. There will be no opportunity to make up a missed quiz, however, you can arrange to take a quiz early. Your lowest quiz score will not be considered when calculating your final grade. 1 Midterms: You will be expected to take one midterm this semester. Absence from an exam will be excused only if you can provide verifiable and convincing evidence that you have a significant illness, a serious family crisis, or a legal obligation that will prevent you from attending. Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you must inform me in advance of the test date. You are expected to promptly make arrangements with me to make up the midterm. The midterm is scheduled for Monday, June 6th during class. Final Exam: Wednesday, June 22nd, 3:30 – 5:30 pm. Grading policy: Your grade will be based on: Quizzes Homework Midterm Final exam 10% 20% 30% 40% Calculators: Calculators will not be allowed during exams and quizzes. Students are encouraged to do the homework assignments without the use of a calculator. ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accommodations that you may require for this course. Withdrawals: You may withdraw from the class without consulting anyone until Friday, June 3rd. If you withdraw before Wednesday, May 25th there will not be any tuition penalty. Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is adjacent to the LCB and JWB. The hours for the Fall semester are: 8 am – 8 pm Monday-Thursday and 8 am – 6 pm on Friday. The tutoring center will open the second week of classes. Rules: Please do not behave in a way that will lessen my ability to teach or another student’s ability to learn. Be honest about your own academic work. 2
