Textbook: Calculus with Differential Equations by Varberg, Purcell & Rigdon (9th ed.)
Instructor: Victor Camacho
Office:
LCB 317
E-mail:
camacho@math.utah.edu
Office Hours: Thursday: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Required Set of Skills:
You should be familiar with everything that you learned in Math 1210 which
includes: evaluating limits, differentiation of polynomial and trigonometric
functions, product rule, chain rule, quotient rule, integration of polynomial and
trigonometric functions, u-substitution, and the fundamental theorem of
calculus.
Course:
In Math 1220 you will learn about various geometric applications of the integral,
the calculus of logarithmic functions and exponential functions, more advanced
techniques of integration, conic sections, improper integrals, numerical
approximation techniques, infinite series and power series expansions, and a
brief introduction to differential equations.
Practice Problems: Every week I will post practice problems from the book in addition to
your regular homework assignment. The practice problems will not be graded,
though it is highly recommended that you complete them for your own benefit.
The practice problems will help you drill certain concepts while the homework
problems will be a bit more challenging.
Homework: Homework assignments will be handled through WebWork (see course website
for more details), an online software that allows you to submit your answers to
homework questions electronically and get immediate feedback. Homework
sets are assigned weekly and are due before 11:00 PM every Thursday. Late
work will not be accepted unless sufficient written documentation can be
1
provided to verify your unusual circumstances. Your two lowest homework
scores will not be considered when calculating your final grade.
Quizzes:
An in-class quiz will be administered every Friday of the semester at the
beginning of class. Each quiz will consist of a few problems very similar to the
ones from that week's homework assignment and practice problems. The
quizzes start at the beginning of class and will last exactly 10 minutes. You will
not be allowed to take the quiz if you are more than 10 minutes late (it would be
a logistical nightmare with so many students), so please show up on time! You
cannot make up a missed quiz unless sufficient written documentation can be
provided to verify your unusual circumstances. You may arrange to take a quiz
earlier in the week if needed. Your two lowest quiz scores will not be considered
when calculating your final grade.
Midterms: You will be expected to take 2 midterms this semester. Absence from an exam
will be excused only if you can provide verifiable and convincing evidence that
you have a significant illness or serious family crisis that will prevent you from
attending. Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you must inform me
in advance of the missed test. You are expected to promptly make
arrangements with me to make up the test. The first midterm is scheduled for
Monday, September 24th, and the second midterm is scheduled for Monday,
November 5th.
Final Exam: Your comprehensive final exam will be closed book and closed notes. You may
use a calculator if you choose. The final will be administered on Monday,
December 10th from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM in JFB 102.
Grading Policy: Your grade will be based on:
Quizzes
Homework
Midterms
Final exam
10%
30%
30% (15% each)
30%
Calculators: I strongly recommend you have a graphing calculator or scientific calculator for
this course. You may use any calculating tools available to you in order to
complete your homework assignments. However, on quizzes and exams you will
not be allowed to use your cell phone calculator or your computer calculator.
ADA Statement:
The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be
provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, and psychiatric
disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any
such accommodations that you may require for this course.

Withdrawals:
The last day to withdraw from this class without consulting anyone is Friday,
October 19th. If you withdraw before Wednesday, August 29th there will not be
any tuition penalty.
Tutoring:
The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study
areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is adjacent to the LCB and
JWB. The hours for the Fall semester are: 8 am – 8 pm Monday-Thursday and 8
am – 6 pm on Friday. The tutoring center will open the second week of classes.
Rules:
Please do not behave in a way that will lessen my ability to teach or another
student’s ability to learn. Be honest about your own academic work.
