New Format Pilot of LX 138 P Spanish Major and Minor, Department of Modern Languages UW La Crosse 1. Admissions Requirements There are currently none, but a GPA requirement in SPA 303 and SPA 304 is under consideration to be proposed for entry into both the major and minor. Only 300 and 400 level courses count toward a Spanish major or minor. 2. General Education Requirements Since SPA 101, 102, 201 and 202 are General Education listed courses and must be taken either as university level courses or acquired by means of retroactive credits from high school study, I suppose they should be listed in this category. Aside from these courses, there are no General Education requirements in the Spanish major or minor. 3. Pre-requisite Courses In order to enroll in SPA 303 or 304, students normally take all or most of the sequence SPA 101, 102, 201 and 202 in high school, in college or through a combination of both. Occasionally, a course in this sequence is skipped. High school study allows for placement at various course levels and the subsequent granting of retroactive credits for placement at various levels when a grade of “B” or better is earned in the first university-level Spanish course taken for a grade. It could be argued, therefore, that there are 16 credits in pre-requisite courses involved in the Spanish major or minor program requirements, however, many students complete all or most of these credits through high school study of Spanish. 4. Core Courses SPA 303 and 304 are both four credit courses and could be considered to function as core courses, although we list them as required courses for the major and minor. Bth courses are required to be taken by both majors and minors as pre-requisites to all other Spanish courses at the 300 and 400 levels. We call them “bridge courses.” 5. Major Courses We have four categories of required courses and several options within three of the categories. Thirty-four per cent of the credit hours must be earned at UW-L. Students returning from study abroad must complete one three-credit Spanish course at UW-L. A student has the right to petition this policy. In this event the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages shall appoint a committee to evaluate the case in terms of the following criteria: 1. Proficiency examination (oral and written), and 2. Evaluation of the student’s performance prior to the study experience in the foreign country. The committee shall submit its findings to the department chair who in turn will report to the student concerned. C. Please Note: At UW-L it is possible to pursue a minor in International Studies with a Latin American emphasis. Interested students may design an individualized course of study in consultation with the Director of International Studies Curriculum. For more details pick up the brochure on Latin American Studies. 7. Special Notations These are spelled out in the current catalog and amended when needed. Most of them relate to Teacher Education students and their special requirements, to the Retroactive Credit policy and Placement Testing, or to study abroad requirements and policies.
