Peer Consultant Application
Background
The Public Speaking Center is housed in the newly designed Murphy Learning Center. The Public Speaking
Center provides quality peer-to-peer consulting for all UW-L students seeking assistance on oral presentations
and public speaking assignments. Peer Consultants aid students with topic selection, outlines, delivery, audiovisual aids, managing speaking anxiety, and increasing confidence. Peer Consultants attend occasional training
sessions, promote the Center’s services, and aid in developing the Center’s resources.
Students interested in serving as a Peer Consultant should email this completed application to Dr. Tony DocanMorgan (tdocan@uwlax.edu). Applicants may be contacted for an interview. Approximately five to ten Peer
Consultants will be selected each semester. Applicants will be evaluated on the quality of their application and
interview, public/presentational speaking experience, consulting/tutoring/ mentoring experience, ability to
provide speech/presentation feedback, GPA, and ideas for promoting and developing the Public Speaking
Center.
Peer Consultants can volunteer, earn income if work study eligible, and/or earn credit for CST 391: Practical
Applications in Communication Studies. CST 391 fulfills elective credit for CST majors.
• 3 units = 120 total hours or 8 hours of work per week
• 2 units = 80 total hours or 5.3 hours of work per week
• 1 unit = 40 total hours or 2.7 hours of work per week

The Public Speaking Center can be open during Murphy Library hours, which includes MondayThursday 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 a.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., and
Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. Please estimate your availability.
