Housekeeping Crew Supervisor Position Description – Summer 2016 Position Summary The Housekeeping Crew Supervisor (HCS) is responsible for overseeing and working with the Residential Living housekeeping student crew. The HCS is a highly visible and influential role. Beyond the customary responsibilities of hiring, training, and scheduling, the HCS is expected to create and promote an awareness of and respect for Residential Living through positive personal interactions with residents, students, staff and visitors. An effective HCS works alongside crew members and helps them to develop strong teamwork skills and a positive work ethic. Accountability The HCS reports directly to the assistant director of summer conferences – housekeeping services Specific duties • Assist the director of summer conference housing in hiring, training, and maintaining staff • Actively participate in and assist with a pre-summer conference all-staff meeting to be held in the evening on Wednesday, April 27 in the DUC Alumni Room • Supervise summer student housekeeping crew o Coordinate crew’s work schedule o Evaluate individual crew member performance both formally and informally o Meet daily with crew to communicate tasks to be completed o Work with the crew as a lead worker o Take part in disciplinary actions as needed o Address in a creative manner any ethical issues of the custodial crew o Act as a role model for crew at all times o Hold crew members accountable for their actions • Actively function as a member of the core staff management team o Attend and participate in weekly core staff meetings and other activities o Work with core staff to make accommodations for incoming conference groups o Provide accountability for the preparation of the halls and to the custodial crew • Maintain an accurate inventory of supplies and linen • Any other duties requested by the director and/or the assistant director of summer conferences General qualifications and eligibility The requirements of this position are not compatible with taking classes in the summer. Therefore, preference in hiring will be given to applicants who are not taking summer classes (on-line classes taken on one’s own time are permitted). Qualifications include: • Applicants for these positions should have previous employment experience in Residential Living, preferably on one of the summer conference crews, and/or comparable work experience elsewhere. • Be an enrolled student at a UW System school • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 • Possess a positive attitude and have a proven record of cooperation • • • • • • • Past Residential Living staff experience, campus management experience, or student custodian experience is strongly preferred, with the potential to succeed as a peer supervisor Ability to work with limited supervision Possess a friendly, customer-service oriented attitude Must be flexible and willing to work evenings, weekends, and other times as needed Be in good conduct standing at UWSP Possess good leadership, communication, organizational and time management skills Exhibit a solid work ethic Previous employment in any summer conference position does not guarantee future employment in that same position. Miscellaneous There are several time periods during which no one should plan to be off, due to the specific needs of these conferences: Special Olympics Basketball Team Suzuki turnover June 9-11 July 15-17 July 23-24 Time off As this is a core staff position, extended time off (three or more consecutive days) during the summer is not guaranteed. All requests for time off must be submitted in writing to the supervisor at least two weeks in advance. No time off should be expected during the month of August. Specific days off needed in August must be disclosed prior to signing your employment contract. Wages and other info • Compensation for work performed will start at $9.55/hour. • A single room in Hansen Hall is offered to all summer staff while on contract. • It is not mandatory to live on campus except for evenings scheduled for on-call responsibilities. • If you accept a full time position in Residential Living, you may not work for another UWSP department concurrently, as this would put you into overtime pay status. • You may have other employment outside of UWSP if approved by your supervisor. Hours scheduled for the HCS position have priority over outside jobs. Contract period Summer housekeeping supervisors need to be available from May 23 through August 31, 2016. This is subject to change, should the summer conference schedule be adjusted. Fall 2016 residence hall staff will be released early for training. Hours of work may be curtailed or altered during the summer as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This act is still being interpreted by UW System Administration.
