The Land Institute agro-ecologist to present seminar at ISU
Iowa
An agro-ecologist with The Land Institute will present a seminar on the qualities
of perennial plant communities April 24 on the Iowa State University campus.
Jerry Glover will present "Perennial Solutions to Farming's Annual Problems," as
part of the Department of Agronomy's crop production and physiology seminar
series. It will begin at 4:10 p.m., in 2020 Agronomy Hall.
The seminar will feature the qualities of perennials in terms of their ability to store
more carbon, maintain better soil and water quality and manage nutrients more
conservatively than annual plant communities. Glover will discuss the greater
biomass and resource management capacity of perennials and how these
advantages provide a base from which to begin hybridization and selection for
increased resource allocation to developing seeds.
Glover joined The Land Institute in 2002 as an agro-ecologist for natural systems
agriculture projects. He received a bachelor's degree in soil science in 1997, a
bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1998 and a doctorate degree in soil science in
2001 from Washington State University.
