SYLLABUS MATHEMATICS 1060-002 Trigonometry (3 Credits) General Information • Lecture: Tuesday, Thursday, 06:00 PM - 07:20 PM at JTB 130. • Instructor: Omprokash Das, das@math.utah.edu. • Office Hours: Wednesday 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM or by appointment at my office JWB 332. • Class Webpage: http : //www.math.utah.edu/ ∼ das/T eaching/1060/math1060.html Course Structure • Textbook: PRECALCULUS by Larson-Hostetler, ISBN 13: 978-0-61864346-2, ISBN 10: 0-618-64346-X, 7th edition, Chapters: 4, 5, 6 and 10.710.9. • Prerequisites: “C” or better in (MATH 1010 OR MATH 1050) OR Accuplacer CLM score of 60 or better OR University Math Placement score of 3 Fulfills Quantitative Reasoning (Math). • Course: In this course we will learn about Trigonometric functions and their inverses, Trigonometric equations and identities and their applications and Vectors. We will basically cover Chapters: 4, 5, 6 and 10.7-10.9. • Homework and Quizzes: – Weekly homework will be assigned on every Thursday on the course webpage. – There will be Quizzes every week on Thursday. Each quiz will be of 20 minutes duration and will cover the materials from the last two lectures. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the lectures. 1 – Homework will not be collected, however I strongly recommend you to work on all problems in every homework, because each problem on the quizzes will be very similar to those assigned in the homework. Some of the quiz problems may be directly taken from the homework problems, so do work on it! – No make up Quiz will be given, however the lowest two quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. • Midterms: There will be two Midterms (1 hour each). • Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam of 2 hours at the end of the semester. • There will be No make up Exam. All exams are closed book exam. • Calculators: A basic Scientific Calculator will be sufficient for doing Homework. No calculator is allowed for Quizzes and Exams. • Laptops and Cell Phones: Use of Laptops, Cell Phones, e.t.c., are strictly prohibited during the lecture. In case of emergency please take your ‘conversation’ out of the class. Grading Quizzes – Grading policy: Your grade will be based on: Midterms (2) Final exam 20 % 50 % (25 % each) 30 % • Grading Scale: A AB+ B BC+ 93 − 100% 90 − 92% 87 − 89% 83 − 86% 80 − 82% 77-79% C CD+ D DE 73 − 76% 70 − 72% 67 − 69% 63 − 66% 60 − 62% 0-59% Exams • Location: All the exams will take place in the regular class room JTB 130 (including the final exam). • Exam Dates: – First Midterm: October 6, Thursday, 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM. – Second Midterm: November 17, Thursday, 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM. – Final Exam (Comprehensive): December 13, Tuesday, 06:00 PM 08:00 PM. 2 • Important Note: I reserve the right to change any policy during the semester. Any updated information will be emailed to your E-mail ID registered with Campus Information System(CIS). Once an email is sent, it is student’s responsibility to check and understand it. I will not be responsibly if someone doesnt receive the email. Many important information will be emailed to your CIS mail throughout the semester, so please check your mail regularly! • Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates, it is adjacent to the LCB and JWB. • Withdrawals: The last date to withdraw from this class is October 21, Friday.
