6th Grade Language Arts Reading Challenge-4th Quarter
Once again this nine weeks students will be required to read TWO books of their choice for
Language Arts class for a grade. After reading each book, students are required to write a short
summary about that book. A summary is a brief statement of the main points of the text. Students
need to turn summaries into Mrs. Mason in order to earn credit for reading the book. Summaries
should be a minimum of five sentences long. Once summaries are graded, students will write their
name and the title of the book on a book cut out to hang in the hall. The class with the most books
read at the end of quarter will win a reward.
Your Summary for an Informational Text should include:
Who- who (or what) is the story about?
What- what mainly happened to the ‘Who?’
When- when did the ‘What’ happen?
Where- where did the ‘What’ happen?
Why- why did the ‘What’ happen?
How- how did the ‘What’ happen?
Your Summary for a Fictional Text should include:
Somebody- who is the main character?
Wanted- what does the main character want or what is the main goal?
But- What is the problem?
So- What is the solution to the problem and/or what steps does the character take to solve the
problem?
Then- How does the story end?
