Point Source Pollution ­ This form of pollution is easily identifiable. It is characterized by a plume of highly concentrated pollution near the source like from a pipe or the site of a spill. Examples:
It comes from a
single source.
• Oil Well gusher Point Source Pollution, you can point to the source
in the Gulf
• Exxon Valdez Oil Tanker Spill in Alaska.
• Waste Water Treatment Plant emissions.

Non­Point Source Pollution
I can distinguish between examples of point source and non point
source pollution and can suggest an appropriate practice (BMP) to improve a specific non point problem.
Non point source pollution is the result of a wide variety of human activities on the land. It is usually found spread out throughout a large area. It is often difficult to trace the exact origin of the pollutants because the activity is so widespread. The most common nonpoint­source pollutants are sediment , nutrients, microorganisms and toxins.
Examples: • Stormwater Runoff
• Sediment
• Nutrient pollution

A huge thunderstorm has created pockets of flooding across the county. Runoff from the area has increased the amount of nutrients, sediment, and waste going into the river.
Is it point source or a non point source of pollution? What is your evidence? This would be a non­point source. The runoff will contain nutrients (waste, fertilizers) from all over the county. It would be impossible to track down all the sources of waste,
sediment, and nutrients.
