Immediately following the talk, Eugene will be available to discuss nature
conservation from the Urals to Japan until 1:45 p.m.
BRIEF BACKGROUND: Degrees from Moscow State University, Yale F&ES, and China’s
Northeast Forestry University. Past 20 years: busy bridging transboundary gaps in
conservation work between Russia and the United State, Europe, China, Mongolia, and East
Asia. Long history of cooperation with the Biodiversity Conservation Center, Socio-ecological
Union, World Bank, Global Environmental Facility (GEF), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Pacific
Environment, UNECE, Russian, Mongolian, and Chinese bureaucracies and local communities.
Since 2004: focus on transboundary issues on the Amur River Basin, a highly complex
watershed of northeastern China, the Russian Far East, and eastern Mongolia. May 2013
recipient of the Whitley Conservation Award “Keeping rivers wild and free;” October 2014
recipient of the prestigious “Misha Jones Award” awarded by Sosnovka Coalition of
Environmental and Indigenous groups of Asian Russia; 1993 recipient of an Echoing Green
Global Fellowship.
