Lesson Plans for the week of March 31 – April 4, 2014 Content Standards MS-ESS1-4 Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from strata for how the geologic timescale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6-billion-year-old history. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on how analyses of rock formations and the fossils they contain are used to establish relative ages of major events in Earth’s history. Examples of Earth’s major events could range from being very recent (such as the last Ice Age or the earliest fossils of Homo sapiens) to very old (such as the formation of mountain chains and ocean basins, the evolution or extinction of particular living organisms, or significant volcanic eruptions.] Monday (31) LT – I can assess my knowledge of the carbon cycle after taking the test. Students will be taking a summative test over the carbon cycle. Summative Assessment : Carbon Cycle Test Media/Technology: None Special Needs: Students will be read to. Tuesday (April 1) LT – I can gain an understanding of relative and numerical time. Students will place events in sequence and assign relative times to each event. Students will gain an understanding of relative and numerical time. Students will become familiar with the methods used by scientists to develop the Geologic Time Scale. Formative Assessment: Timeline sheet Media/Technology: SMART Presentation Special Needs : No assistance will be needed Wednesday (2) LT – I can asses my strengths and weaknesses after taking a pretest on Geologic Time. Students will take a pretest over geologic time. If time remains, students will get their carbon cycle tests back and compile their data on their strengths and weaknesses. Thursday (3) LT- I can increase my knowledge on fossils after using informational text. Students will begin class, by using the strategy “knee to knee”. In this activity, students will face each other and read a section from informational text. When finished, one of the partners explain the section that has been read and the other listens to coach them, along. Then they read another section and the other partner tells what the section is about. Students will complete a worksheet on the reading. After, the exercise, students will make a pamphlet on fossils using the information from the book. Formative Assessment: Worksheet from informational text Media/Technology: None Special Needs: Students will be read to. Friday (4) LT- I can increase my knowledge on fossils after using informational text Students will continue working on their pamphlet. Class discussion when finished. Students will complete an exit slip on fossils Formative Assessment: Exit slip Media/Technology: SMART Lesson Special Needs: Students will be read to
