David Burney, FAIA, is CMAA's Person of the Year
MCLEAN, VA (9/5/2012) David Burney, FAIA, Commissioner of the New York City
Department of Design and Construction, has been named CMAA's 2012 Person of the Year.
The award will be presented on October 22 at the Industry Recognition banquet that
concludes CMAA's National Conference & Trade Show in Chicago. Burney joins a roster of previous
honorees that includes former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, ACE Mentor Program Founder
Charlie Thornton, and the CM/PM Community of Greater New York, for leading the renaissance of
Ground Zero.
Burney oversees a staff of more than 1,200 with an annual capital construction budget
exceeding $6 billion. DDC projects range from sidewalk pedestrian ramps to the city's new Police
Academy. The commissioner has been a strong advocate of professional Construction Management,
believing that this service has consistently resulted in successful projects at lower cost to the city.
He has worked to promote quality design within the budget and time constraints that
always guide city projects, and has been a long-standing supporter of sustainability initiatives in all
DDC activities. He has stressed Best Management Practices to help protect the natural environment
during major construction projects.
Burney also has enhanced Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Design and Construction
Excellence program by implementing innovative procurement, design and construction standards, with
a greater emphasis on qualifications based selection for designers and Construction Managers.
"CMAA's Person of the Year for 2012 has not only been an active and committed member
of the Association, but has made DDC's commitment to excellence a concrete reality in one of
America's largest and most complex building programs," says CMAA President and CEO Bruce
D'Agostino, CAE, FCMAA. "CMAA is honored to recognize Mr. Burney and we congratulate him on a
career marked by distinction and achievement."
The Person of the Year presentation will cap an evening that also spotlights the winners of
CMAA's Project Achievement Awards in 14 categories of building projects, infrastructure projects, and
program management. CMAA will also present its Distinguished Service, Distinguished Owner and
Educator of the Year Awards and induct new members of its College of Fellows.
