Bihar is one of the largest states of India. It is the 12th largest state in terms of geographical
size of 38,202 sq./mt. (98,940 sq./km.) where 10,38,04,637 people live, who have preserved
the history of the state through its education. During the period of Buddhism, the world
famous 'Nalanda University' was established. Its heartening to know that only about 63.82%
(5,43,90,254) population of Bihar is literate. Apart from Hindi, other languages like Maithali,
Angika, Magadhi, Bhojpuri, etc. are spoken by the majority of the people. Bihar is popular
for its rich cultural heritage.
The workshop, “Training of Master Trainers of Bihar on Art Integrated Learning” was
held from 30th August, 2014 to 4th September, 2014 was organized by S.C.E.R.T., Bihar in
collaboration with N.C.E.R.T., New Delhi and UNICEF, Bihar. The workshop was attended
by 50 teachers and teacher educators from 20 districts of Bihar. The workshop was
inaugurated by Prof. Pawan Sudhir (Head, DEAA, NCERT) and Dr. S.A. Moin (Director,
ODL, SCERT, Bihar).
The training workshop was held for six days focusing on the following major key points:
1. Chetna Satra (Morning Assembly): In Bihar, every local school begins with a Morning
Prayer meeting, hence the training workshop was also begun with a Morning Prayer. The
beginning of the assembly should be done in such a way that it should be knowledgeable,
attractive and entertaining, while keeping in mind the local culture of the state. An
attempt was made to bring variety in the way the assembly was conducted as it had lost
10
its charm over the years. Hence, innovative and attractive ways were thought of to make
it more interesting. The participants were encouraged to perform with new innovative
ideas; thus geometrical shapes were used to make it more interesting and knowledgeable.
They were encouraged to make use of the various languages of the state while performing
prayers, story-telling, presentation of regional news, etc. in order to promote its regional
culture. The use of paper caps, masks and different types of crowns had created
excitement among the participants. Such activities, according to the participants, would
bring about enthusiasm among the students, as well as bring out their creativity.
The morning assembly was presented in various styles on a daily basis. On the last
day, kite making and kite flying activities took place, in which the Director, Mr. Hassan
Waris, as well as the participants flew their kites. Mr Hassan Waris said that "this activity
reminded him of his childhood days. If such activities are part of the morning assembly,
then there would have been good attendance during the assembly.
2. Visual Arts: during the first stage, various concepts of visual arts had been discussed.
Because a few new participants had joined this workshop, hence, those concepts were
again reinforced among all the participants. Mr. Sheikh Zahoor introduced "Chahya
Prabhav" a painting activity through which teachers could easily teach geometrical
concepts to their students. The participants were enlightened about the ways through
which subjects like languages, sciences, social sciences, etc. could be taught with the help
of visual arts.
3. Theatre: Theatre activities were the main attraction during the workshop. Theatre is a
mixture of various art forms and is also collective art form. Participants took a lot of
interest in these activities. Participants were divided into groups, in which they were
given a specific topic on which they had to direct and perform. During the performance,
the remaining participants observed the play, thus, giving suggestions for improvement
and also discussed various ways of teaching and learning through theatre. The teaching
through art integrated learning was focused upon in relation to their teaching transactions
within the classroom. They were made to understand that, with the help of theatre,
teaching and learning of subjects would become simple, also moral values could have
been taught among the children.
4. Documentary Films : the participants were made to see films related to Art Integrated
Learning that had been made by different schools, and CIET, NCERT. The main films
were "Har divas kala divas" and "Arts as Brain Developer". Apart from this, Ms. Veena
Gandhi had developed a documentary film in which various schools of Delhi where AIL
11
pedagogy is being implemented, was also shown to the participants. After viewing this
film, the participants got new ideas to implement art integrated learning in their class
work for better outputs.
5. Closing Ceremony: The workshop on Art Integrated Learning, from 30th August 2014 to
4th September 2014, now came to an end. The entire hall was decorated and displayed
with pictures, mask, paintings, puppets, idols made by the participants during the
workshop. In the closing ceremony, Director of SCERT, Mr. Hassan Waris (Head
O.D.L.), Mr. Syed Abdul Moin, Prof. Pawn Sudhir, Head, Department of Arts and
Aesthetics, NCERT, and Ms. Parul and Ms. Promila from UNICEF Bihar addressed the
participants. After the success of the workshop, the educational officers declared that AIL
would be initiated in 200 schools with the guidance from Prof. Pawan Sudhir. The
Educational officers of SCERT, announced that from 2015, on the occasion of 'Teachers
Day', the teachers would be facilitated, who have successfully contributed towards art
integrated learning.
At the closing ceremony, reporters from different newspapers were invited. They
were impressed with the programme and published an article on “Art integrated learning”
in their respective state newspapers. The workshop was started with a Bihar folk song and
ended with the traditional folk songs.
