FOCUS ON FUNDING News and Notes from the STLCC Office of Institutional Development September 2008 the central role of the mathematical sciences in fostering progress in other scientific disciplines as well as the continuing active development of the mathematical sciences themselves. Careful attention to mentoring of students, thorough evaluation mechanisms, and plans for sustainability will be essential to successful projects. Focus on Funding is a newsletter published by the St. Louis Community College Office of Institutional Development (OID). It features external funding opportunities available from federal, state, local and private funding sources, as well as other news. For more information about the OID and services provided by our staff, please contact Castella Henderson, Director, at 314/539-5354, or visit the OID web page at: http://www.stlcc.edu/odweb/. Required elements of proposed activities include: • Partnerships between the mathematical sciences and other science or engineering discipline(s) • Proactive recruitment • Early research experiences in the mathematical sciences and partner disciplines • Mentoring and professional development Please note that the lead Principal Investigator (PI) must be in the mathematical sciences Grant Opportunities New! from the National Science Foundation—Proactive Recruitment in Introductory Science and Mathematics (PRISM) The goal of the PRISM program is to strengthen the nation's scientific competitiveness by increasing the numbers of well-prepared, successful U.S. undergraduate majors and minors in science and mathematics. The program will fund innovative, potentially transformational partnerships between the mathematical sciences and other science or engineering disciplines that widen the cross section of the mathematical sciences to which freshman and sophomore students are exposed and that provide these students increased opportunities for research experiences involving the mathematical sciences. Project duration may be three to five years; the proposal budget may be $100,000 to $600,000 per year. SLCC receives external funding for a variety of projects and programs. Project directors, sources, grant amounts, and descriptions for some of the recent awards are as follows: Deadline: February 16, 2009 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Summer Stipends (National Endowment for the Humanities) Sarah Perkins/Richard Norris, National Science Foundation, $679,487. A grant for the STLCC Center for Plant and Life Sciences and the Florissant Valley Biotechnology program to relocate to a post-incubator on the campus of the Danforth Center for Plant Science, and provide expanded educational programming and internships in the life sciences. The National Endowment for the Humanities is currently accepting applications for the Summer Stipend program. Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, and other scholarly tools. Summer Stipends support full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months. John Messmer, U.S. Election Assistance Commission, $21,035. A grant to implement the "Show-Me New Poll Workers" project to recruit 500 STLCC students to serve as poll workers in the November 2008 election. All four campuses are participating in the effort. Summer Stipends are awarded to individual scholars. The program accepts applications from researchers, teachers, and writers regardless of their institutional affiliations. Applicants with college or university affiliations, however, must be nominated by their institutions James Monahan, Community Colleges for International Development/U.S. Department of State, $360,290. A grant for the Community Colleges for International Development to send fourteen students from Egypt, Pakistan and South Africa to study at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park during the 20082009 academic year. Successful applicants receive an outright award of $6,000 for two consecutive months of fulltime research and writing. Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov, the central federal government portal for all grant applications. Deadline: October 1, 2008 Congratulations!
