Transcending borders for policy research and innovation Overview The International Policy Center (IPC) was established at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in the fall of 2005. IPC is devoted to interdisciplinary research and education that advances the learning of Michigan faculty and students and informs policy makers on policy issues arising from an increasingly globalized world. In particular, the goal of IPC’s work is to demonstrate how in an interdependent world welldesigned policies of governments and international institutions can improve the welfare of people, especially those in developing nations. Faculty Associates and Advisory Board IPC is supported by 36 faculty associates who examine a variety of policy issues including: regulation and operation of financial and labor markets, migration and remittances to underdeveloped countries, constraints on entrepreneurship and firm performance, the nature of and approaches to terrorism, and outcomes of international trade negotiations. In this context, IPC researchers are engaged in three large, multi-phase research programs dealing with the Global Financial System and Capital Flows, Globalization and Firm Performance, and Labor Issues in Developing and Transition Economies. The first program examines the capital market reforms and the resultant patterns of capital flows. The second examines policies toward foreign investment and trade, and assesses the effects of foreign investment on the productivity of domestic firms. The third focuses on policies that improve the functioning of labor markets in transition and developing economies. Publications The findings of the individual and team research projects carried out by IPC faculty associates and external collaborators result in two types of IPC sponsored publications that are circulated among academics and policy makers around the world. The Working Papers Series is an electronic database that disseminates work-in-progress that reflects the broad range of IPC’s research activities. All of the Working Papers may be found at http://ipc.umich.edu/workingpapers.php. In addition, IPC issues Policy Briefs on a variety of topics related to globalization. Through the distinguished lecture series, IPC has hosted Kemal Dervis (United Nations Development Program Administrator), Danny Leipziger (Senior Vice President of the World Bank), Jean Lemierre (President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development), Paul Krugman (Princeton University professor and The New York Times op-ed columnist), and Senator Chuck Hagel.
