Faculty of Business & Economics: Undergraduate Awards Regulations Made by the Academic Board of Monash University Version incorporating amendments as at 21 March 2013 Part 1 - General 1. Interpretation In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears award means a degree or diploma; candidate means a person enrolled as a candidate for an award; course of study in relation to an award means the course of study for the award as determined by the faculty board under these regulations; credit point means the unit of measurement used to express the weight of a unit; dean means the dean of the faculty; degree means a pass degree listed in schedule 1 or an honours degree listed in schedule 2; diploma means a diploma listed in schedule 4; double degree means two degrees undertaken concurrently in accordance with these regulations; faculty means the Faculty of Business and Economics; faculty board means the faculty board of the faculty; faculty information handout means a faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning a course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time. 2. Course of study 2.1 The course of study for an award comprises the units determined by the faculty board under this section. 2.2 The faculty board may from time to time, with the approval of the Academic Board, determine the units, compulsory and optional, comprising a course of study and in relation to the units may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to - Faculty of Business & Economics: Undergraduate Awards Regulations 2.3 3. 2.2.1 timing, frequency, content and duration; 2.2.2 industry based learning; 2.2.3 prerequisite, corequisite and sequential units; 2.2.4 unit combinations; 2.2.5 major and minor studies; 2.2.6 candidate attendance and participation; 2.2.7 credit points; 2.2.8 assessment; and 2.2.9 satisfactory completion. The faculty board must cause any determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout. Approval of work Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate in any year of a course of study may undertake only units which, before enrolment in that year, were specifically approved for the candidate by the dean. 4. Credit points Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate must not in any one year undertake units with a total value of more than 48 credit points. 5. Credit for equivalent work A candidate may be granted credit for equivalent work in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations. Where credit is granted, the candidate must complete the relevant course of study within the time specified by the faculty board. 6. Single units 6.1 The faculty board may permit a person who is not a candidate for a particular award to undertake one or more units in the course of study for that award but, except as otherwise provided in subsection 6.2, no credit may be granted towards the award in respect of any unit so undertaken. 6.2 The faculty board may, in accordance with the Credit towards a Degree or Award Regulations and in respect of a unit undertaken pursuant to subsection 6.1, grant a person credit towards the relevant award where 6.2.1 the unit has been satisfactorily completed; and 6.2.2 the person has subsequently become a candidate for the award. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements 7.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time. 7.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for an award, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the award under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study. Part 2 - Pass degrees 8. 9. Degrees 8.1 In this part pass degree means a degree listed in Schedule 1. 8.2 A pass degree shall be undertaken pursuant to these regulations. Time limits Except where otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study for a pass degree must be completed in a minimum of three and a maximum of eight years. 10. Qualification A person who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a pass degree qualifies for that degree. Part 3 - Honours degrees 11. 12. Degrees 11.1 In this part honours degree means a degree listed in Schedule 2. 11.2 An honours degree shall be undertaken pursuant to these regulations and on campus. Admission to candidature 12.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for an honours degree must have 12.1.1 qualified for a degree of the university; or Page|3 Faculty of Business & Economics: Undergraduate Awards Regulations 12.1.2 hold a qualification which the faculty board is satisfied is equivalent to a degree of the university. 12.2 An applicant must not be admitted to candidature unless the faculty board is satisfied that 12.2.1 the applicant is adequately prepared for study at honours level; and 12.2.2 adequate supervision and facilities are available. 13. Time limits Except as otherwise determined by the dean in any particular case, the course of study for an honours degree must be completed in one year of full-time candidature. 14. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for an honours degree qualifies for the degree in the grade determined by the faculty board. Part 4 - Double degrees 15. Degrees A candidate may – 15.1.1 with the approval of the faculty board of this faculty and of the other faculty involved, undertake a degree of this faculty specified in part A of schedule 3 concurrently with the degree or one of the degrees of another faculty specified in that part in relation to the particular degree of this faculty; or 15.1.2 with the approval of the faculty board undertake concurrently any two degrees of this faculty which are specified together in part B of schedule 3. 16. Reversion to one degree 16.1 A candidate undertaking a double degree may with the consent of the faculty board transfer to candidature for the degree of this faculty only or, where the degrees are both of this faculty, to one of those degrees only. 16.2 Where pursuant to subsection 16.1 a candidate transfers to candidature for one degree only, the faculty board must specify 16.2.1 the units required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the degree; and 16.2.2 the time within which the units must be completed. Time limits A candidate undertaking a double degree must complete the course of study for both degrees within the time limits specified in part C of schedule 3. Part 5 - Diploma 18. 19. Diplomas 18.1 In this part diploma means the Diploma of Business. 18.2 The diploma must be undertaken pursuant to these regulations and by offcampus learning. Time limits Except where otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the course of study for the diploma must be completed in not less than two or more than four years. 20. Qualification A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for the diploma qualifies for the diploma.
