ANXIETY IN STUDENTS Anxiety Surpassing Depression in College Students According to a recent study by the American College Health Association, almost one in six college students has been treated or diagnosed for anxiety-related conditions within the last year (2015). Anxiety is a term that refers to several conditions and can also accompany other conditions like Depression. Causes are varied and include classes, jobs, money, and relationships. Almost half of all students who experience anxiety-related conditions entered college already having the condition (Hoffman, 2015). Where Can Students Get Support to Reduce Anxiety? Academics •The Academic Learning Center is a service available to students for a variety of academic needs such as help and feedback on writing skills, help in LAC courses, developing effective reading and studying strategies for the college level, and preparation for national exams like CLEP, Praxis I & II, and the GRE. The Academic Learning Center is located in the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC) in rooms 007 and 008. •Tutoring Services are also available to students who need a little extra help in their classes. Beginning in September, the Academic Learning Center is providing walk-in tutoring services called the A-Team in Rod Library on Sunday evenings. They are also providing supplemental instruction seminars for a variety of classes such as Calculus, Organic Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology. For more information, visit their website! Counseling Center •Counseling services are available to all UNI students who are enrolled and have paid the Man- datory Health Fee. The center provides confidential appointments between students and professionally-trained counselors on personal, social, or emotional issues. They are located within the Student Health Center. Please visit their website for more information. •The Counseling Center provides a service for students to take a free mental health screening tool, called ULifeline, that allows students to connect with outside resources to help them with mental health problems. This resource is specifically designed for college students and their experiences. Visit the Counseling Center website for more information. PAIRs • The Peer Academic Advisor In Residence program (PAIR) places one student in each residence hall who is trained by the Office of Academic Advising. PAIRs provide outreach to students, individually and in group programming, on topics such as: exploring majors / minors and careers, time management, communicating with professors, study tips, campus resources etc. Visit the PAIR website to meet the PAIRs and gain more information! Career Services Job & Internship Fair Career Services is hosting the Job and Internship Fair on Monday September 21st in the McLeod Center from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students at any stage in their academic career to begin networking and building resources during and after their college experience. Over 175 different companies and organizations will be in attendance. Freshman and sophomores can gain great experience with talking to employers and practicing their speaking and writing skills. Upperclassman can look for internship or job opportunities as well as learn how to present themselves in a professional capacity. Here are a few tips for all of our students: •Research the companies that you are interested in speaking to. •Bring plenty of copies of your resume. •Ask smart questions. If you couldn’t find information on a company when you researched them, ask them at the career fair! •Dress smart. These are your potential future employers! •Speak clearly and have a good handshake ready. •Smile! Be confident in your skills and abilities. Meet a Peer Academic Advisor in Residence! Meet Brianna!
