Simple but Effective Advice for Students
Simple but Effective Evidence-Based Advice for
College Students: Microaction and Macrochange
Helping Students Suceed!
Sometimes, we focus on the bigger picture rather than the smaller steps needed in order to help
students be successful. Dr. Sugn Hee Kim from the University of Kentucky studied what advisors
can do to help students who struggle academically in college. She found that initiating
microactions (actions that require little effort, time, and resources) create positive macrochanges
in students’ lives overall adhearing to their success.
Examples of Microactions
Below are microactions that advisors can recommend
to advisees, depending on challenges they may face:
1. Sitting in the front row of class.
2. Jotting down important dates
(e.g. the day of adding/dropping classes).
3. Creating a potential exam question from
what was learned right after class
(rather than immediately checking phone).
Meet a Peer Academic Advisor in Residence!
Meet Madison! She’s the new Noehren Hall PAIR! She’s a junior
in Secondary English Education!
What is the most rewarding part of being a PAIR?
“To me [it] is feeling like a reliable and useful presence on campus. I love all of the UNI
staff and students that I have gotten to know through this position, and I am never
unhappy about doing my job because I know that each day will bring new and
rewarding experiences and relationships in my life!”
Any advice for students who are struggling?
“You are never really alone at UNI. There are people who’s job is to specifically help
you, and so taking advantage of the resources on campus is super important! I also
recommend getting involved on campus. It’s very easy to spend your free time just
lounging and watching Netflix, but I guarantee that if you get involved in things outside
of your room, you won’t regret it.”
