First-Year Student Forum
Join us to explore the Novice-to-Expert model within the
first-year experience!
-Learn about problem-solving and decision-making skills for first-year students.
-Build an understanding of college learning and the campus environment.
-Create a smooth transition into a post-secondary institution and build the
foundation for their academic and professional careers.
The novice to expert model has a foundation in academic disciplines like
computer science and chemistry to help students with problem-solving and
decision-making. This model also has an advising approach that creates a
foundation for the first-year student by creating stages that students must
navigate to acheive a successful academic experience. Starting at the base, skills are
created to acclimate first-year students to the new environment and allow for
growth to later stages. Faculty, staff, and peers can help first-year students learn
to create their own big picture plans and goals to enhance student success
academically and professionally both inside and outside the classroom. The
forum will focus on the first three stages of the model, exploring students’
ability to assess situations and make decisions that have long-term impact. This
dicussion-style forum will include a panel of faculty and staff to help answer
Study Abroad
and bring in first-hand experience about working with
questions
first-year students.

Meet a Peer Academic Advisor in Residence!
Meet Rylee! She’s the Campbell Hall PAIR and a sophomore in
elementary/middle level education at UNI!
How do you work with a difficult or special circumstance student?
“The more information I receive, the better that I am able to put
myself into their shoes and lead them in the most helpful direction.
Come talk to me! If I do not have an answer for you, I will find
someone who does!”
Most rewarding experience as a PAIR?
“When I made my first bulletin board, and everyone reacted
wonderfully! They loved it and found it very helpful.”
Contact Rylee at CampbellPAIR@uni.edu!
