OCCUPATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION —ALTERNATE PLAN

Catalog Description:

98 - Occupational Work Experience Education —Alternate Plan

(May be repeated 3 times)

4-8 units

College supervised on-the-job training enabling students to attend college full-time one semester and work full-time the following semester The on-thejob experience must be related to the student’s educational and occupational goals or college major. The training may be paid or volunteer, like an internship. 20-40 hours of work experience each week is required. May be repeated to a total of 16 units.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. apply and refine those skills learned in the classroom to a job in his or her career field where those skills may be demonstrated;

2. apply one’s educational ability, level of maturity, personality, behavior and attitudes toward a job and to inter-personal relationships, and identify those areas where changes may be required;

3. relate work experience education to courses being taken and other courses offered at the college;

4. appreciate the importance of continuing education as it applies to current employment or advancement and retraining needs as they apply to future career satisfaction;

5. develop an understanding of career opportunities, job requirements, employer expectations, and promotional requirements in an occupational setting;

6. become more employable by assessing personal goals, needs, and making a concerted effort towards self-improvement;

8. gain enhanced management skills through the establishment and achievement of learning/performance goals.

Course Content:

Students will become familiar with the concept of “Management by Objectives”—goal setting— which includes descriptive statements describing: What is to be done, how it will be done, how well it will be accomplished, who will evaluate the objective and how will it be evaluated.

Students are expected to meet with their instructor and work supervisor to determine new activities, learning opportunities or experiences which will broaden their knowledge of their job. In some cases, students will be given a plan of training which outlines learning activities to be completed by the end of each semester.

Each learning objective will be approved by the college instructor. During the semester, the instructor will visit the student’s work site to discuss with the supervisor the quality and importance of each objective, level of accomplishment, and personal development of the student.

Special Note:

Students may not enroll in more than one other course during the semester they are enrolled in the alternate plan. Students must complete 12 units of regular course work before re-enrolling in one of the work experience plans. Additional information may be obtained from the Work
