Chabot College September 1994 Course Outline for Portuguese 50B CONVERSATIONAL PORTUGUESE Catalog Description: 50B - Conversational Portuguese 2 units Development of skills learned in Portuguese 50A. Understanding of spoken Portuguese through pronunciation, vocabulary, and applied grammar. Introduction to everyday life of Portuguese-speaking people and the skills needed to successfully function in culture. Prerequisite: Portuguese 50A completed with a grade of "C" or better. 3 hours. [Typical contact hours: 52.5] Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. 2. have become proficient in using the conversational structures and vocabulary presented; have further developed an understanding and appreciation of the culture of Portuguese-speaking people. Course Content: 1. Review and "recycling" of content of 50A 2. Functional vocabulary and grammar to allow students to: a. discuss in simple terms their likes and dislikes and to inquire in culturally sensitive terms into likes and dislikes of others; b. identify clock time, the date, the weather c. to function successfully in basic cultural interactions that involve buying tickets, requesting and paying for services (taxis, post office, hotels); d. be sufficiently comfortably with numbers for simple financial transactions in the currency of the target culture(s). 3. Political and cultural information necessary to be sensitive to cultural differences in social interactions. Methods of Presentation: 1. Lecture/discussion 2. Choral/individual repetition of model speech 3. Re-creation of dialogues and improvisation 4. Small group activities leading to skits, dialogues, etc. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1.
