Chabot College February 1999 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 BASIC BADMINTON Catalog Description: PHED 1BDD – Basic Badminton 0.5 unit The recreational skills course, Elementary Badminton is designed to provide the basic knowledge for the beginning student interested in Badminton. The activity includes the basic fundamentals of the game, and time to practice skills necessary to play. 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. be able to maintain or improve physical condition through big muscle activity. 2. understand the components and be able to execute satisfactorily the rules and strategy necessary to play the game effectively. 3. appreciate the benefits of exercise, and with the skills and knowledge of the activity, develop some interest in it as a possible carry-over activity for future participation. 4. understand and appreciate socially acceptable conduct in a coeducational situation and in competitive play. Course Content: 1. Description and use of equipment. 2. Explanation, demonstration and practice of specific skills related to the activity: a. Clear b. Drive c. Drop shot d. Smash e. Service (singles and doubles) 3. Basic singles and doubles strategy. 4. Rules of the game. 5. Tournament competition. Methods of Presentation: The content of the course will be presented primarily through the lecture-demonstration method. Instruction will be given by both the group method and on an individual basis. Student practice will take place also in groups and individually. Satisfactory attendance and active participation in the activity. 2. Written examination on specific materials related to the course. 3.
