Chabot College September, 1984 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 BADMINTON-BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE Catalog Description: PHED 1BDI – Badminton-Beginning / Intermediate 0.5 unit Satisfactory completion of elementary badminton at Chabot or the ability to demonstrate on the court the fundamental skills and strokes of the game and the rules of play for singles and doubles. The class will meet 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: Satisfactory completion of elementary badminton at Chabot or the ability to demonstrate on the court the fundamental skills and strokes of the game and the rules of play for singles and doubles. Expected Outcomes for the Students: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Students should demonstrate the ability to perform the four basic strokes with better form and with more accuracy and refinement. 2. They should demonstrate improved performance of other elementary skills. 3. They should demonstrate the ability to execute new and more difficult strokes and techniques in order to extend the variety of responses available on each play. 4. They should understand and be able to use more effectively in a game situation the elements of game strategy. They should be able to play a "smarter" game. 5. They should know something of the history of badminton and current badminton activity nationally and internationally. 6. The should develop a keener interest in and appreciation for the sport as a lifetime recreational activity. 7. They should display courteous and sportsmanlike conduct becoming to the sport. Course Content: 1. Review of elementary skills a. Clear b. Smash c. Drop shot d. Drive e. Service (singles and doubles) 2. Intermediate level skills a. Drive serve b. Hairpin and crosscourt drop shots c. Backhand overhand clear d. Round the head shot 3. Singles and doubles strategy 4. Court coverage for doubles a. Side by side b. Up and back c. Instruction will be given by both the group method and on an individual basis. Student practice will take place both in groups and individually. Student discussions will be used to review rules, strategy, and the course content. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1. Satisfactory attendance and active participation in the activity. 2. Written examination on specific materials related to the course. 3. A subjective evaluation by the instructor on form and technique, court coverage, effective use of shots, speed, etc. 4.
