ADVANCED INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS
Catalog Description:
63B – Advanced Individual Projects
(May be repeated 3 times)
2 units
Continuation of Machine Tool Technology 63A. Selected projects to provide certain specialized skills
required for job updating, job advancement, or skill specialization. Strongly recommended: Machine
Tool Technology 60A. 6 hours laboratory.

Expected Outcome for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

properly use precision measuring tools, such as the vernier caliper and height gauge, dial test
indicator, and various types of micrometers;
set up and perform basic drill press, bandsaw, lathe, and vertical milling operations;
set up and do basic surface and cylindrical and grinding operations;
make precision layouts on the surface plate using precision layout tools;
apply basic mathematical formulae for calculating correct speeds, feeds, and values required
for precision part layout;
inspect fabricated parts on a coordinate measuring machine;
write a “first article” inspection report for each assigned project.
Course Content:
This is a laboratory course only. Students are assigned selected projects to provide certain
specialized skills they may require for job retraining, job advancement, or skill specialization.

Set up lathe threading & cutting tools

Clamp parts safely and securely in place for machining

Set proper RPM’s and machine feedrates

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1.
Typical Assignments
a.
Homework: 1-2 worksheets each week on the material covered in the laboratory and
laboratory manual. Example: Sketch the proper tool position on a mill for end milling and
facing operations. Show the orientation of the tool to the workpiece. Show whether the
operation is climb milling or conventional milling. Write down the tool speed (RPM)
settings and feedrates (IPM) at which the cut would need resetting for the “1.5” parallel
Project”.
b.
Laboratory assignment: Using a Milling Machine center drill, drill and ream the holes for
the 1.0” parallel Project, as shown in the Engineering drawing. Test run each tool
operation checking for accuracy and proper tool cutting direction. Center drill only the
first hole and measure the center drilled location per the print. Continue to machine the
balance of the holes to fabricate the part. Inspect the part with a dial caliper “in process”
and create a “first article” inspection report. Did the part pass inspection? If not, why?
