Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Machine Tool Technology 63A INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS Catalog Description: 63A – Individual Projects (May be repeated 3 times) 2 units Design, development, and fabrication of selected projects for the machine tool technology major to develop special entry-level job skills. Strongly recommended: Machine Tool Technology 60A. 6 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: 105] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcome for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. fabricate simple parts on a manual vertical milling machine; manufacture simple lathe parts; be familiar with standard Lathe and Milling cutting tools; be familiar with feeds and speeds; read and interrupt engineering part drawings; inspect simple parts and document dimensions and tolerances; Use simple algebraic formulae to calculate cutting and fabricating values, settings and sizes; operate a scientific calculator, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; drill and tap holes; layout parts to specified sizes and shapes and machine to those layout lines; follow simple operational instructions both written and verbal; recognize and utilize part drawing dimensions and datums to correctly place a part to be fabricated or manufactured in the machine. Course Content: 1. Techniques a. Set up lathe cutting tools b. Clamp parts safely and securely in place for machining c. Set proper RPM’s and machine feedrates d. Edge finding and indicating vices, stock and partially machined parts e. Create part sketches from engineering drawings f. Proper tool usage and selection g. Proper cutting angles for lathe tool bits h. Proper mounting and clamping of tools and parts i. Verification of size and Part Geometry with hand measuring tools j. Documentation techniques for part production k. Key words and phrases and nomenclature in the manufacturing world l. Identify and measure cutters, tools, wrenches, clamps and clamping techniques 2. Safety a. Safe operation of the machines and tools in the lab b. Safe workplace habits and procedures c. Typical Assignments a. Homework: 1-2 worksheets each week on the material covered in the Laboratory and lab manual Example: Sketch the proper tool position on a lathe turn and facing operation. Show the orientation of the tool to the workpiece. Write down the tool speed (RPM) settings and diameters which the speed would need resetting for the “step Turn Project”. b. Laboratory assignment: Using a Milling Machine center drill and drill the holes for the 1.5” parallel Project. As shown in the Engineering drawing. Test run each tool operation checking for accuracy and proper tool cutting direction. Center drill only the first hole and measure the center drilled location per the print. Continue to machine the balance of the holes to fabricate the part. Inspect the part with a dial caliper “in process” and create a “first article” inspection report. Did the part pass inspection?
