Course Outline for Art 19
METAL SCULPTURE
Catalog Description:
19 - Metal Sculpture
3 units
Introduction to techniques of metal sculpture--welding, forging, brazing and casting of various metals.
Application to sculptural forms in relief and three-dimensional statements. Strongly recommended:
Art 17 and Art 10. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should:
1. gain knowledge of traditional and contemporary metals and techniques for metal sculpture;
2. experience the problems of the metal craftsman and the artist as one person;
3. understand and apply elements and principles of three-dimensional design.
Course Content:
1. Introduction to various metals and the methods involved in working each kind. Safety rules.
2. Metal forging, welding and cutting; mild steel. The student chooses between (a) or (b) below.
a. Three dimensional form--welded modules, found or fabricated.
b. Welded volumes three dimensional or relief composition. Welded sculpture to be 15" to 24"
in size.
c. Surface enrichment explained and possibly applied to one or more of the above. Three dimensional or relief fo
3. Metal casting
a. In foundry sand
b. Lost wax process; must be three-dimensional form, 12" maximum. The castings are executed
from student's original models through the foundry process.
c. Final polish or patina applied to the sculpture. The student casts aluminum and bronze.
d. mounting bases for metal sculptures complete the assignments.
